Scottish post-punk band Franz Ferdinand are coming to China this December, with dates announced today in Shanghai on December 6 and further South in Guangzhou and Shenzhen on December 8 and 9 respectively.

The band will be playing at Modern Sky Lab on the Shanghai leg of their tour, while venues for the Guangzhou and Shenzhen dates will be announced one month in advance, according to organizers.

The tour is being planned by Sound of the Xity, a promotional company based out of Beijing, who have been putting together a rather impressive run of gigs of late – see Four Tet for reference.

Color us a soft shade of pleasantly surprised to have such a big name reach us here in the dirty South. We have a sneaking suspicion that something big would have to be going on in order for the band to make their way this far down the country, a festival or two perchance.

After the release of their brand-spanking new album, Always Ascending, their first new studio album in five years, the Scottish band will arrive in the Middle Country with a new line-up and new ambitions. Moving further into new wave and dance rock territories, Always Ascending has received mostly positive reviews

Franz Ferdinand first came to prominence in the mid-noughties, with their brilliant, self-titled debut earning them comparisons to The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. Their sound, however, set them apart, as they blended punk, funk and dance influences to create music with bounce and more than a little bite.

Shanghai: Dec 6, 9pm, RMB320-450. Modern Sky LabTickets.
Guangzhou: Dec 8. Venue TBA.
Shenzhen: Dec 9. Venue TBA.
