Just as we reported last week, Shanghai has bid farewell to this year’s plum rain season, according to Shine.
On Sunday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau announced that the subtropical ridge continued to move west and had left the perimeter of the city, marking the end of the 19-day-long plum rain season for this year.
The end of this year’s plum rain was slightly later than last year's season, which ended on July 5. That being said, the day count of the 2018 plum rain season is still four days shorter than the average.
A shorter plum rain season also brings fewer downpours. This year, the plum rain didn't show its power until the last week of the season, with precipitation in downtown Shanghai only reaching 134.5 millimeters, much less than the average of 243.1 millimeters. The weather department even referred to this season as "irregular," according to The Paper.
Although we can finally say goodbye to the wet and humid season, more extreme weather conditions are on their way to Shanghai, starting with the Super Typhoon Maria. As a result, strong winds are forecast for July 11 and 12.

As the plum rain season comes to an end, we welcome the Xiaoshu (小暑) and Dashu (大暑) of the 24 solar terms, which are renowned for consecutive high-temperature days and typhoons. According to The Weather Channel, the temperatures over the following days will hover around 33 degrees Celsius. So, get ready for the scorching and sweltering days ahead.
