The second installment in the blockbuster Baahhubali series finally secured a China release after breaking Indian box office records at the end of 2017. The sequel follows Shivudu, a young villager, who discovers his true identity of royal descent. He must save Queen Devasena, enslaved by the terrible Bhalladeva, whose sole objective is to kill the son of his enemy: King Baahhubali. Inspired by Indian mythology, the S.S. Rajamouli-directed film has been lauded for its spectacular special effects.

May 5: The Young Karl Marx

Directed by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck, this 2017 biopic stars German actor August Diehl in the title role. The historical film follows a 26-year-old Marx as he and his wife Jenny are exiled during the Industrial Revolution in the 1840s. It's received mixed reviews from critics, with The New Republic's Josephine Livingstone calling it "a very boring Downton Abbey."

Megan Leavey
Based on a true story, Megan Leavey follows the titular character, a young American Marine corporal deployed to Iraq, as she develops a strong bond with Rex, the dog she trains while working as a K9 handler. After a bomb wounds both of them and Leavey is sent home, she advocates for Rex to be taken out of combat so that she can adopt him, reaching out to congressional officials and eventually seeking help from New York Senator Chuck Schumer. Critics praised the film for its emotional resonance.

May 18: A Quiet Place

Quiet Place
Starring Hollywood wife-husband duo Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (who also directed the film), this modern horror film shows what happens when a family must live in complete silence as they hide from mysterious predators that hunt by sound. The unique thriller has received rave reviews from the critics for its understated terror and superb performances.

May 25: Solo: A Star Wars Story

The Star Wars franchise returns to theaters this month with a prequel centered on Han Solo. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, the all-new adventure follows Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) as he meets future Millennium Falcon copilot Chewbacca and the notorious Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover). Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton and Michael K. Williams also star. Disney has been quietly promoting the film after The Last Jedi flopped in Chinese theaters earlier this year.

May 25: Perfect Strangers

Perfect Strangers
This Italian film finally secured a China release for this month after proving to be both a critical and box office success in Italy back in 2016. The Paolo Genovese-directed comedy tells the story of seven old-time pals who reunite for dinner. They decide to hold a fun game where everyone puts their phones in the middle of the table. Each time a message or phone call is received on one of the phones, another friend must share it with the whole table. Hilarity (with a touch of drama) ensues.
