Feb 2: I Love 80s
UNICO
Shanghai throws another of their recurring I Love 80s parties, bringing
you the best dance music of the decade from Michael Jackson to Madonna.
Tease your hair, grab your best fluorescent button-down and head over.

Feb 2: MHP
Shanghainese musician and producer MHP is one of the city’s original homegrown techno talents. He’s released several acclaimed albums, including 2016's Folding Traces. Last year he began fusing elements of pop and jazz into his distinctive style of techno. MHP will perform at MAO with a full band and vocalist, along with a DJ set by Shanghai Ultra, who’s part of underground techno crew VOID along with MHP.

Feb 2: Cobra Lily One Year Anniversary: The Golden Era
Luxe Xintiandi fusion restaurant Cobra Lily celebrates its first birthday with a 1920s Shanghai-themed party. The cover price gets you two cocktails and appetizers from a special menu. For entertainment, DJ Kadwell will give a unique performance with the the Chinese traditional instrument pipa. Dress code is "1920s Shanghai chic."

Feb 2: Swindle
Producer Swindle is a major name in UK grime, warming up the icy genre with elements of jazz and funk on his last few releases. Swindle's last visit to Shanghai was for a performance at The Shelter back in 2015, and he has a song called 'Shanghai' on his LP Peace, Love and Music.

Feb 2: Medusa: Ouissam
Shanghai's most rapturous pansexual dance party returns this month with an international guest in the form of Ouissam. The founder of multiple record labels and queer dance parties based out of both Hanoi and Hong Kong, he spins a dance floor-centric mix of obscure gems and classic tracks spanning disco, house and techno. Michael Cignarale and Mau Mau provide support, with visuals by VJ @killerweixin.

Feb 2: Diamond D
Longstanding Bronx-born hip-hop producer and MC Diamond D comes to Shanghai for an all 45s vinyl set at Modern Sky Lab. One of the founding members of NYC hip-hop crew D.I.T.C., he’s a skilled turntablist and has been active in the NYC hip-hop underground since the late 80s, working with everyone from The Fugees to A Tribe Called Quest.

Feb 3: Kolner Karneval
Shanghai’s only Cologne Karneval Party goes down at Zeitgeist Brewery thanks to their collaboration with the Cologne Carnivals Committee of Shanghai. The cover price gets you a buffet dinner from 7-9.30pm paired with free flow beer, wine, mixers and soft drinks from 7pm-1am and a midnight goulash soup to keep the party going. The dress code is "be who you always wanted to be."

Feb 3: Gravez
SHFT brings over Atlanta producer Gravez, an up-and-comer whose chilled-out trap and hip-hop beats, including collaborations with Goldlink plus a brand new track "Swervin'" featuring Lonny X, have been praised by Travis Scott and Jaden Smith. Catch his show at Arkham.

Feb 3: Oedo Kuipers
Dutch singer and musical actor Oedo Kuipers visits Shanghai for a solo concert at Shanghai Culture Square. He grew up singing at school and church choirs and made his stage debut in a Christmas play at age 8. Kuipers will perform a selection of songs from classic Broadway musicals, including West Side Story, Pippin and Miss Saigon.

Feb 3: Jiashan Winter Market
The last Jiashan winter market of the season goes down the first weekend in February. Bundle up and head over there for a wide selection of artisan foods, beverages and crafts from Ben’s Bakery, Cin Cin, Sparrow Organic Products, Mr. Burger and lots more.

Feb 3: Illenium
Denver-based electronic music producer Illenium comes to Shanghai for a show at Modern Sky Lab. Known for his haunting and emotive bass music and remixes, Illenium's live show features a keyboard, drum pad and cutting-edge lighting and visuals to create an immersive experience.

Feb 3: SONS
Spotlight-shy techno producer SONS, who doesn’t give interviews or release photos of himself, comes to Shanghai for the first time. Expect a standout set from this mysterious producer, plus support from Shanghai DJs Tobias Patrick and Lindberg.

Feb: 3 Polyswitch
Two
longstanding Shanghai promoters, Antidote and Discosmic Adventure, team
up to bring Polyswitch, an up-and-coming talent from Casablanca, on his
first China tour. Expect a fresh and danceable mix of cosmic funk,
micro-house and jazzy techno. Catch his Shanghai debut at Dada with Nik
Hilp of Discosmic Adventure playing in support.

Feb 3 & 10: Le Loup Sentimental (The Sentimental Wolf)
This innovative and moving puppet show by Shanghai Puppet Theatre tells the story of Lucas the wolf. He’s leaving home for the first time and his dad gives him a list of things he can eat, from Little Red Riding Hood to the Three Little Pigs. But Lucas has a kind heart, and he isn’t sure he can eat any other animals. The 60-minute show is perfect for kids age 2-8.

Feb 4: Globe On Screen: The Merchant of Venice
Globe On Screen is a program that screens performances from Shakespeare's Globe, the famed playhouse in London, in theaters across the world. The latest offering is a rendition of Shakespeare classic The Merchant of Venice. Starring as Shylock is Richard Pryce, a two-time Tony-winning actor whose onscreen credits include the protagonist in 90s cult film Brazil and the memorable role of the High Sparrow on Game of Thrones.

Feb 4: Monthly Vegan Brunch at Glam
On the first Sunday of every month, Glam serves up a vegan, gluten-free brunch. The cover price gets you a set meal of healthy and invigorating dishes free from all animal byproducts and gluten. RSVP to ensure that you get a spot.

Feb 6, 10 & 25: NT Live: Saint Joan
NT Live, a program from the National Theater of London that screens its
performances for audiences across the world, kicks of a season of
acclaimed theatric shows with Saint Joan. British actress Gemma Arterton
gives an electrifying performance as the titular character in this
experimental take on the classic play by George Bernard Shaw, which
blends modern technology into 15th century France to make history
relevant for teens and adults.

Feb 7: Julie Byrne
Folk musician Julie Byrne released her sophomore album, Not Even Happiness,
last year to wide acclaim. Raised in Buffalo, New York and an avid
traveler through the United States, she's known for her ethereal and
emotionally resonating folk songs about relationships and the natural

Feb 8: F45 & That’s Shanghai Sports Awards
Once a year, we gather to recognize those who have truly made their mark on the city's sports scene: from the home-run hitters and KO punchers to those who lift up their mates when all seems lost. They're our friends, our family and, occasionally, our blood-thirsty rivals. Donít miss the awards party, where all the winners will be announced.

Fe 8-10: Three Days of Carnival
UNICO Shanghai throws a weekend-long bash to celebrate a Shanghai version of the iconic Carnival, with the party going down at the same time as Brazilian Carnival takes place in Rio de Janeiro. Special deals each day from 9.30-10.30pm include a free flow of fruit caipirinhas for ladies on Thursday, gin & tonic free flow for all on Friday, and buy-one-get-one "aphrodisiac margaritas" on Saturday.

Feb 9: Shanghai Ballet: The Last Mission of Marco Polo
This adaptation of The Travels of Marco Polo is a sumptuous ballet set in Beijing during Kublai Khan's rein of Persia in 1292. Renowned director Jose Carlos Martinez is behind the choreography, which was designed especially for the Shanghai Ballet.

Feb 9: Culoe De Song
Culoe De Song is a South African techno producer who got his start
working with South African nightlife stalwart Black Coffee, then went on
to attend Red Bull Music Academy. He released his debut LP Washa, an
experimental and futuristic techno concept record about a fictional new world unified by dance music, in 2016. Catch

Feb 9: Jauz
Working out of San Francisco, bass house and chill trap producer Jauz has collaborated with Diplo and released singles on Mad Decent and Spinnin' Records. He's also apparently given himself the Chinese name "Jiaozi" in order to appeal to fans during this 11-city China tour. Catch his Shanghai show at Linx.

Feb 9-10: Kyle Kinane
Kung Fu Komedy's latest guest is comedian Kyle Kinane. Originally from Illinois, he has a longstanding relationship with Comedy Central; he does the voice for their on-air announcements. Kinane has also opened for Patton Oswalt and has released several comedy albums and DVD specials, including Death of the Party and I Liked His Old Stuff Better.

Feb 10: Magic Piano & The Chopin Shorts
This innovative animation tells the story of two cousins who ride a magic piano on a trip across Europe in search of their father. Shanghai Oriental Art Center screens the film with a live performance of the score, which was first performed by renowned pianist Lang Lang. The Shanghai performance will be by virtuoso young pianists Xue Yuan from Shanghai and Lin Yufen from Taiwan.

Feb 11: Shanghai Sharks vs Qingdao Eagles
In the final game of the regular season before playoffs begin, local
hero basketball team the Shanghai Sharks face off against the Eagles

Feb 11: Children's New Year Symphony Orchestra Concert: Zootopia
Specially designed for young concert goers, this show brings together live musical performances with animation and storytelling with sets and costumes for a unique peek into the musical experience. Children will also be invited up to the orchestra where they can play instruments, dance and sing along to a collection of songs from animated classics, including Zootopia, Frozen, The Lion King and Spirited Away.

Feb 11, 13 & 24: NTLive: Jane Eyre
As one of several National Theatre performances screening at the Huangpu Theatre this month, including Saint Joan and Medea, this stage rendition of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel of female empowerment is electrifying thanks to a star turn by actress Sally Cookson. The play is performed through Bristol Old Vic, a classic London Theater company active since 1946.

Feb 11 & 25: Hedda Gabler
"Just married. Bored already. Hedda longs to be free..." reads the
tagline of this latest adaptation to Henrik Ibsen's classic feminist
work. Starring acclaimed actress Ruth Wilson (BBC's Jane Eyre, Luther),
National Theatre's rendition of the show will be screened at the Huangpu
Theater this month.

Feb 13-14: The Butterfly Lovers
The Shanghai Ballet has been dazzling audiences around the world since 1979, and one of their classic performances is this rendition of The Butterfly Lovers, a traditional Tang Dynasty story that is considered the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet. Catch their latest performance of this touching story at the Shanghai International Dance Theater.

Feb 14: Valentine’s History of China In Fifty Objects Tour
Newman Tours debuts this specially-designed tour of the Shanghai Museum based on the popular radio series concept. Itís got a romantic twist for Valentine's Day, so youíll learn about everything from a bronze vessel that cost a king his life when he gifted it to a concubine to the romantic history behind the mythological Qilin. Tours must be booked in advance.

Feb 19-20: Forest Stories
This artful shadow puppet play consists of five short stories, a combination of Aesop’s fables, like ‘The Crow and the Fox,’ and fairy tales like ‘The Three Little Pigs,’ each with a moral lesson to inspire your little one. The 50-minute play is perfect for children aged 4-10.

Feb 22: Pomo
Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Pomo comes to Shanghai for a show at Arkham. He blends elements of hip-hop and 80s era funk for a memorable form of organic-sounding electronic music. Catch the up-and-comer's live show from STD.

Feb 28: Ride
British rock band Ride formed in the late 80s and is considered a seminal shoegaze band, with their debut album, Nowhere, as one of the genre's most important records. The band broke up in 1996 due to artistic differences, with one member moving on to play bass for Oasis. They have since reunited for several tours, and are now making their way to Shanghai. Catch their show at Modern Sky Lab.
