Shanghai Creates Ayi ID System to Regulate Domestic Help Market

In efforts to regulate the domestic help industry, Shanghai authorties have begun issuing identification passes to tens of thousands of ayi.

SHINE reports that more than 45,000 ayi have already been given IDs as part of a citywide system set up by the Shanghai Commission of Commerce.

The non-compulsory ID system will allow employers to check information such as the real name and the agency of an ayi, which will then be verified by a public security system. Employers can also rate ayi through the system after each completed round of service.

The system for employers to do an information check on ayi ID numbers is currently only available in Chinese. It can be accessed by calling the 962521 hotline, visiting www.962512.com or following the service on WeChat. (When That's Shanghai tried contacting the hotline number, though, it didn't work).

Up to 93 domestic helper agencies have already signed up to participate in the program.

The new ayi ID database comes as part of an initiative from the commission to clean up Shanghai's domestic help market. It will spend the next three to five years expanding coverage citywide.

Ayi are not obligated to sign up for an ID.
