Nov 1-Nov 5: Pride and Prejudice

For their latest foray into canonic Victorian literature, the UK's Chapterhouse Theatre Company adapts Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's classic romance novel of manners, to the stage and takes it on a China tour.

Nov 2: Inner Life Burst Album Release Concert

JZ Club hosts the release show of the Shanghai-based Coelho Band, led by Portuguese guitarist Luis Coelho. With members from Cuba, Mauritius and Russia, the band brings together different music cultures for a unique, guitar-driven sound.

Nov 2: Anvil

OG Canadian heavy metal band Anvil, who formed in 1978 and were forerunners of metal's most iconic bands like Megadeth and Metallica, come to Shanghai for a show at Bandai Namco. Anvil were the subject of an acclaimed documentary in 2008 and have released 16 studio albums.

Nov 3: TEDxPuxi: 'YES! And...'

Operating under the TED banner, TEDxPuxi is a non-profit organization that promotes the spreading and sharing of ideas through short informative talks. This event will address and deconstruct the possibilities surrounding the phrase “Yes! And…” looking at the way in which these simple words, when spoken in dialogue with someone, offer the speaker and the listener new opportunities. Speakers this year include Starbucks China CMO Emily Chang, mental health expert Kate Yan and agency founder Genevieve Flaven. Check out our TEDxPuxi interview series here.

Nov 3: Asian Vibes Sixth Anniversary

Local techno crew Asian Vibes celebrates their sixth anniversary at Arkham. The headliner of the night is Scalameriya, who deals in industrial techno combined with dubstep, drum n bass and breakbeat and bass music. Joining him is former Asian Vibes resident Nakazawa, who is returning to Shanghai after a 3-year absence. A limited number of sixth anniversary t-shirts will be on offer as well.

Nov 4: Bubba's 12th Annual Chili Cookoff

One of Shanghai’s longest-running annual traditions returns this year with teams of local chefs and independent cooks competing for the title of best chili in town. Drink deals include RMB25 Budweisers, Goose Island and Sierra tequila cocktails. The entry price gets you a pint of Budweiser, unlimited chili tastings and a People’s Choice ticket, which allows you to cast your vote for the winning team. More info here.

[Ed. note: this event has been canceled. More info here.] Shanghai’s most spectacular cabaret and theatre celebrates its fourth anniversary in style with a line-up of its best performers. Nov 4: Hyph11e Vanishing Cinema Album Release

Shanghai producer and member of Genome collective Hyph11e releases her debut album, Vanishing Cinema, on local label SVBKVLT. Expect harsh and innovative industrial sounds at the release party, with sets by Osheyack, Howell and Charity and visuals by Wang Newone. Cover price includes digital copy of the album. Nov 5: Baikal

Named after a lake in Siberia that is the deepest and oldest in the world, this mysterious Dutch producer based in Berlin deals in introspective house and techno. Beijing promoters dART bring him to Shanghai for his China debut at Elevator.

Nov 7: AustCham Shanghai 2017 Melbourne Cup

Tickets are now on sale (grab them here) for the AustCham Shanghai 2017 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, November 7. This year the event will take place in the iconic Shanghai Tower Garden Ballroom and Outdoor Terrace. The event program features a three-course lunch with free-flow wine and beer, entertainment, raffle, silent auction, fashions on the field contest, after party, and of course the famous horserace televised live from Melbourne, Australia, all the while raising significant funds for charity.

Nov 7: NBA Player Tracey Murray Live at The Camel

Tracey Murray launched his career as a stellar college player with the UCLA Bruins, and then spent 12 years in the NBA playing for The Wizards, Lakers, Rockets, Blazers and Raptors.He’s touring China to support the Brother Hoops Charity an will be making an appearance at The Camel. Nov 8: Sean Nicholas Savage with Molly Nilsson + Better Person

This excellent and eclectic line-up at Yuyintang brings together acclaimed Canadian musician Sean Nicholas Savage, known for his distinctive voice and lo-fi indie pop, with brooding Swedish pop act Molly Nilsson and Berlin synth pop producer Better Person.

Nov 8-11: Rau Ram Pop-Up

La Maison hosts this three-day pop-up from Rau Ram, a Southeast Asian bistro from Pun + Projects in Yangon, Myanmar. The ticket price gets you a set menu by Rau Ramís Hawaiian chef Kevin Ching (vegan and vegetarian options available) and a cocktail menu featuring Southeast Asian specialty drinks is also on offer.

Nov 9: Kristallnacht Jewish Ghetto Tour

On the anniversary of Kristallnacht, Newman Tours hosts a one-off tour focusing on the plight of the Jews that managed to escape to Shanghai from Nazi-occupied Europe. Tour stops include the Hongkou Ghetto, the neighborhood in which Jewish refugees resided in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, as well as the Mascot Roof Garden and the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum.

Nov 9: Modern Women of Wellness

Co-working space Paper Shanghai hosts this evening focused on women and wellness with inspirational talks from 6 keynote speakers. Topics include self-care practices, knowing your limits and adapting to a changing environment.

Nov 9: HVOB

Vienna-based electronic duo HVOB perform their organic, emotional take on electronic music live with a drummer, and have been receiving acclaim for the uniqueness of the tracks on their latest album, 2017’s Silk. Catch their live show at Modern Sky Lab.

Nov 9-Dec 3: Jersey Boys

This acclaimed jukebox musical, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2006, tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, an iconic Italian-American band formed in New Jersey in the 1960s. See their story come alive onstage and hear renditions of classic Four Seasons songs like 'Sherry,' 'Big Girls Don't Cry,' and 'Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.'

Nov 10: Made in Shanghai - The Kickoff with DJ Cut Killer

UNICO invites France’s DJ Cut Killer for a set of hip-hop meshed with rock, pop and reggae. Catch him at the club for the debut of their new Friday party series, Made in Shanghai. Entry is free from 11pm-midnight with the password ‘Coco.’ Otherwise, RMB100.

Nov 10: The 尺口MP x Siamese Cats

Fuzhou-based band The 尺口MP (or The Romp), who released an EP of catchy, poppy surf-rock on Guangzhou's Qiii Snacks Records earlier this year, come to Shanghai for a show alongside quirky Japanes pop-rockers Siamese Cats.

Nov 10: Silent Servant

Fiercely original techno producer Silent Servant, who’s based in LA, comes to Shanghai for a set at All. Founder of the label Jealous, he’s known for the experimental nature of his dark and cerebral DJ sets.

Nov 11: Pac 12 China Game

This fall marks the third year that the Pac-12, the prestigous league made up of 12 of the worldís best universities, will open its menís basketball season in China. This year, UCLA will face off against Georgia Tech in an intense season opener. The game will be streamed live on ESPN in the US as well as on Youku sports.

Nov 11: Chic-a-go-go with Round Eye and Lao Ayi

Chic-a-go-go is a long-running Chicago public access television with a cult following. The show has featured an astounding roster of musical guests over the years, from Patti Smith to Sonic Youth to Snoop Dogg, and will be recording an episode in Shanghai at Yuyintang, where local bands Round Eye, Lao Ayi and Dirty Fingers will perform.

Nov 11: M Talks China: Little Soldiers: An American Boy, A Chinese School and the Global Race to Achieve

In her new book, Little Soldiers: An American Boy, A Chinese School and the Global Race to Achieve, journalist Lenora Chu attempts to break down the stereotypes surrounding the Chinese education system, chronicling her own journey as a parent and raises issues about rural inequality and academic achievement among young children in China. Catch the author speak about her book at Glam.

Nov 11: Supperclub 4th Anniversary

Rescheduled from October, Shanghai's premiere fine dining pop-up event celebrates their fourth anniversary in style with this party at a villa in Sinan Mansions. Organizers are keeping most of the details under wraps, but we know that Pop Secret will be providing the food, and there will be a theme of Surrealism with surprises throughout the night.

Nov 11: DJ Die

Wonky Kong hosts Bristol-based electronic music pioneer DJ Die. He founded his own drum & bass label, Full Cycle Recordings, and was a member of musical projects Reprazent and Breakbeat Era. Catch his set at Dada.

Nov 12: Shanghai International Marathon

This world-class marathon event, which has been awarded a gold medal by IAAF for 5 straight years, returns to Shanghai with 5k, 10k and full marathon options available for every age and experience level. More than 3,000 volunteers are on hand throughout the race to ensure safety and support, and training programs are on offer in advance of the day. Approximately 38,000 runners are expected to compete, turning the whole city into a carnival of runners for the day.

Nov 12: M Talks China: Creating Across Cultures: Chinese Women in the Arts

In the latest M Talk at Glam, writer and editor Michelle Vosper introduces her new book, Creating Across Cultures: Women in the Arts from China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, which introduces 16 Asian female artists and their work spanning writing, composing, filmmaking and choreography. Joining Vosper at the talk is master Sichuan opera performer Tian Mansha, one of the women featured in the book.

Nov 15: Tinariwen

Tuareg musical collective Tinariwen, who won a Grammy for their 2011 album Tassili and are renowned for their emotional, politically charged desert blues, come to Shanghai for the first time as part of a tour from Split Works.

Nov 16: Ladies Who Tech in Action x General Motors

Founded by a group of women working in STEM industries who aim to spread awareness about the lack of women in science and engineering professions, Ladies Who Tech hold their latest event in conjunction with General Motors, the first automotive company to have a female CEO. With three speakers from different professional backgrounds, the event will be held at the GM headquarters in Jinqiao, but GM will be providing free transportation from the city center. The event is free with RSVP.

Nov 17: Sam Binga

Jane Siesta’s long-running local drum & bass night Sweatshop brings over Bristol-based DJ Sam Binga for his Shanghai debut. Expect an energetic dance floor for his unique clash of jungle, grime, footwork, dub, juke and drum & bass.

Nov 17: Bezier + Josh Cheon

For this exciting double-booking, Antidote brings over Bezier of San Francisco's queer dance party collective Honey Soundsystem and Josh Cheon of disco/dark wave re-release label Dark Entries. Expect a synth-laden, queer-friendly dance floor with everything from vintage house and disco tracks to acid, goth rock and electropop.

Nov 17: Girl Power featuring MØ

STD hosts this showcase of female artists. The full line-up is still being confirmed, but the show will be headlined by Danish electropop artist MØ, who's best known as the vocalist on Major Lazer's enormously popular song 'Lean On.' She's also collaborated with Justin Beiber and Iggy Azalea.

Nov 17: Paul van Dyk

One of the world's most famous DJs and an icon of trance music, Paul van Dyk returns to Shanghai after recovering from a near-death experience last year, when he fell off the stage during a festival. He's touring his chart-topping latest album, From Then On, which explores his new lease on life and has a trippy, futuristic visual accompaniment.

Nov 17-18: Shanghai Black Fashion Week

This debut event in Shanghai focuses on showcasing diverse underground fashion design talent from all over the world. Head to event space DOBE WE@Donghua for a weekend of fashion shows and seminars from China-based designers and fashion experts. The theme for the first Shanghai Black Fashion Week is ‘royalty’ which will be reflected in the collections.

Nov 18: Chi Fan for Charity

Now on its seventh year, Chi Fan for Charity is Asia’s largest charity F&B event. Every year, some of Shanghai’s best restaurants donate a meal for 10 people — diners then choose their restaurant for the evening and purchase the meal, and 100 percent of the profits go to a selected charity. The causes for 2017 are the World Academy for the Future of Women, which advocates for gender equality and social justice and Shanghai Sunrise, a charity that focuses on raising funds for educational scholarships for underprivileged and at-risk people in Shanghai. Nov 18: Euphoria featuring College

Fake Music Media teams up with the Delegation of the European Union to China for this party series showcasing European electronic music. Arkham hosts the Shanghai installment, headlined by popular French synth wave producer College, who is best known for the track 'Real Hero' from the soundtrack to the movie Drive. He's joined by Amsterdam's Marcel Vogel and Germany's Andre Hommen.

Nov 18: Denis Sulta

Beijing promoters Suanpan bring over Glasgow DJ Sulta, who at only age 24 was listed as #26 on Resident Advisor's Top 100 DJs Poll and graduated from Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal. Heís known for catchy big-room house tracks cut through with melodic synth and will be making his China debut at Dada.

Nov 19: Public Gangster Tour

Longstanding Shanghai tour company Newman Tours hosts this special one-off of their classic gangster tour. Your tour guide (in character as a colonial Shanghai ganger) gives you an intro on the cityís biggest figures of the underworld, from 'Big Eared' Du with his lucky monkey heads to 'Pockmarked' Huang and his police car drug distribution. Other perks include the chance to try chopstick pickpocketing, learn how to cheat in a casino, and an optional extra Cops vs. Robbers Shooting Competition.

Nov 19: Shanghai Shenhua vs SIPG Chinese FA Cup Final First Leg

The biggest football games in Shanghai history take place this month as Shanghai SIPG take on arch rivals Shenhua in a two-legged FA Cup Final. Will the red half of Shanghai rejoice with Hulk, Oscar, Wu Lei and coach AVB? Or will the blues make up for a dismal season and Carlos Tevez finally justify his mega wage?

Nov 23: Thanksgiving

From Boxing Cat to Mercato, restaurants and bars around Shanghai take American Thanksgiving as a chance to show off their comfort food prowess and cook up a delicious version of one of the world's least tasty poultries; stay tuned for our full list of Thanksgiving meals later this month.

Nov 23-Dec 6: West Side Story

This classic Broadway musical tells the tragic love story of Tony and Maria, a 1950s NYC version of Romeo and Juliet whose families are part of two opposing street gangs. Songs like 'Maria,' 'America,' and 'I Feel Pretty' are some of Broadway's most iconic, and the movie version of the musical, which debuted in 1961, won 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Nov 24: John 5 and the Creatures

John 5 is a renowned metal guitarist who played in Marilyn Mansion’s band before joining up with Rob Zombie, who he still plays guitar for today. He’s worked with everyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Ozzy Osbourne, and has also had a successful solo career. He’s visiting Shanghai as part of the tour for his 8th solo album, Season of the Witch, which dropped earlier this year.

Nov 25: M Talks China: Ballet in China with Eva Shan Chou

Eva Shan Chou, Professor and Chair of the Department of English at Baruch College, City University of New York and an expert in ballet, leads this talk about the history and development of ballet in China, featuring Swan Lake, works from the Cultural Revolution like Our Red Army Girls and White-Haired Girl and contemporary works from 2005 onward.

Nov 25: St. Andrew's Ball 2017

The British Chamber Shanghai throws their annual Scottish shindig complete with a full traditional dinner of haggis, neeps and tatties, lots of whisky, live Ceilidh music, bagpipes, and more. Dress code is kilts or black tie and funds raised will be donated to Home Sweet Home Shanghai.

Nov 30: Steve Aoki

One of the worldís most famous and famously over-the-top DJs returns to Shanghai for a set at Linx. The highest grossing EDM act in North America, Aoki is known for antics like throwing a cake at the crowd, and has collaborated with everyone from Afrojack to Linkin Park.

Dec 1: Red Ribbon Gala Dinner

This annual banquet meant to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS prevention and education for Chinese youth returns to Andaz Xintiandi. Brought to you by ShanghaiPRIDE and Q-events, this yearís dinner will again benefit Shanghai Qinghai Health Center on their HIV/AIDS awareness program. The dinner includes a four-course Western meal, live entertainment, raffles, gift bags and a discount at XUAN Bar for the after-party.
