Though a number of roads will shut down to traffic over the Golden Week holiday, the Shanghai Metro will extend hours for certain lines to accommodate the travel rush.

From Sunday, October 1 to Tuesday, October 3, Line 1 will operate for an additional 70 minutes in the evening, while Lines 8 and Line 2 (with the exception of the eastern section traveling to Pudong International Airport) will add an additional 80 minutes of transportation time. Last arrivals for all three of those lines will happen past midnight — take a look at the full timetable on Shanghai Metro's website.

Meanwhile, the Friday-Saturday "extended schedule" will remain in place for Lines 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 throughout the holiday, meaning that the lines will all remain open for an additional 70-80 minutes (September 30 and October 6-7). Again, consult the Shanghai Metro website for a full schedule.

Three extra train services will also be added on October 7 for the eastern section of Line 2 to meet the needs of passengers returning from PVG. The trains will depart from the airport at 10.20pm, 10.40pm and 11pm, but they will only stop at Chuanshan and Guanglan Road stations. From Guanglan Road station, passengers can transfer to the remaining stops on Line 2, which will have extended opening hours on those two days.

Line 2 will resume to normal operating hours on October 8, however the three new airport trains from the previous day (departing from 10.20pm, 10.40pm and 11pm) will also be added on this day. But those three trains will only stop at the following stations: Chuansha, Guanglan Road, Century Avenue and People’s Square.

Last but not least, East Nanjing Road station (on Lines 2 and 10) will be closed to commuters at 3.30-11.30pm from Sunday, October 1 to Wednesday, October 4, with trains passing by those stations at those times. Neighboring Line 2 stations People’s Square and Lujiazui will introduce special traffic control measures to ensure safety.
