It’s confirmed: British TV chef Jamie Oliver is launching one of his Jamie’s Italian restaurants in Shanghai. The location of the Shanghai branch of the international chain will be 500-square meters, and set over two floors of the new Taikoo Hui mall along Nanjing Xi Lu, where it is expected to open sometime in December.
Known for his accessible approach to English cooking, Oliver came to prominence in 1999 after the debut of his BBC TV show, The Naked Chef, which ran for three seasons and spawned a number of cookbooks. After successfully rejuvenating British school menus in 2005, which saw backing from the UK government; Oliver took to restaurant ownership, launching the first of his Jamie’s Italian brand in Oxford in 2008.
The phenomenally successful chain has since expanded into dozens locations throughout the UK, and to 23 international countries including Australia, Canada, Turkey, Cyprus, Russia, Ireland, Singapore and the UAE to name but a few. Despite starting out in the United Kingdom, the franchise has seen the recent closures of five UK branches due to post-Brexit concerns and an emphasis on an international expansion.
Whilst the Shanghai branch will be the first in Chinese mainland to open, Jamie’s Italian has had a presence in Hong Kong since 2014. Much like the other restaurants part of the chain, the Shanghai restaurant will offer what the group terms, “Rustic Italian food made with fresh, seasonal ingredients and a Jamie-style twist.”
It’s Italian cuisine, via Essex.
