That's Shanghai takes a look at this week's best concerts:
Sep 7: Hang on the Box
Symbolizing the rise of counterculture in late 90s China, Hang on the Box are back! With the release of their first album in four years, the legendary Beijing punk band are set to rip up the stage at the Modern Sky Lab — figuratively, we imagine.
Sep 7, 9pm. Modern Sky Lab, see event listing.
Sep 8: Red Bear Vol. 3
It's back! The night at the Inferno that champions the local music scene, Red Bear Vol. 3 will see the likes of Theory of Convergence, Zhaojiabang, Evolution and Big 7 take to the stage ready to show you what they've got. From grunge to hard rock, this gig promises a night of hook-laden heavy riffs with which to flirt with the possibility of whiplash while headbanging. Devil horns at the ready...
Sep 8, 9pm, free entry. Inferno, see event listing.
Sep 9: Rachael Yamagata
Returning to Shanghai after last November's stop, American singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata takes her soulful yet intimate brand of music across China as part of a six-date tour before jetting off for stops in the US. With four solo albums already under her belt, her work may be most recognizable, having appeared in multiple TV shows ranging from The OC, One Tree Hill and Grey's Anatomy to name but a few.
Sep 9, 8.30pm, RMB260 presale, RMB320 door. Mao Livehouse, see event listing.
Sep 12: Leech
Formed in 1995, Swiss experimental post-rock band Leech tour China for the first time in the band's history. While veering away from their experimental roots in recent years, the band still continues to enjoy a warm reception in post-rock circles with their rock-influenced riffs and sonourous melodies. Support comes from drum and violin duo, Egopusher.
Sep 12, 8.30pm, RMB120 presale, RMB150 door. Yuyintang, see event listing.
Sep 13: Longjin
Incorporating the sounds of traditional Chinese and Western music, Longjin seamlessly fuse the stylings of folk, reggae, funk and dub to bring listeners an ecletic sound unlike any other. This tour finds the Beijing band celebrating their 10th anniversary.
