Hot off the press and blasting straight from 2012: Debra Meiburg Master of Wine is flying up from Hong Kong for a one-night-only (and let's be real, once in a lifetime opportunity) wine tasting event here in fair Shanghai on August 30.
So who is Debra Master of Wine? Well for starters, she's an actual Master of Wine, one of the first people in Asia to receive the title, a qualification issued by the UK's Institute of Masters of Wine that is ackowledged as the highest standard of professional knowledge. She also founded her own wine school and the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition, was named '7th most powerful woman in wine,' and has authored multiple books on affairs of the grape. So yeah, she really, really knows her shit.
But that's only partly the reason for Debra's fame. Long-term Shanghai residents will also recognize her from the taxi TV program Grape Moments (regretfully footage of which seems to have been lost to time) through which she issued wine tips and generally charmed the pants off everyone, catapulting her to considerable renown in the annals of Shamous history.
As fate would have it, such an opportunity to meet Ms Meiburg in the flesh has arisen on August 30, where you can join Debra for a Grand Tasting at the Georgian Wine Festival at The House of Roosevelt on the Bund.
Entrance costs RMB100, which permits you to tastings of as many wines you wish/can taste of the 80+ on offer, and a goodie bag with a Lucaris Burgundy crystal glass and a dropstopper (valued at RMB80).
Debra herself will be giving a short address on the topic of Georgian winemaking, which is widely considered the world’s original wine producing country. She'll also be mingling among the guests and will be available to chat (and maybe take selfies if you're lucky.)
If you want in, register online here for a ticket lickety split – attendance is limited. We've also got two double passes to give away to the event, follow the official That's WeChat (thats_shanghai) and stay tuned for the competition announcement.
