A dozen pools in Shanghai were ordered to suspend operations this week for failing to meet health standards.
According to Shanghai Daily, the pools were shut down after santitation officials found excessive levels of residual chlorine, urea and bacteria in the water.
From July 17 to 31, the sanitation division of the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission inspected 286 pools in response to the city's record-breaking heatwave, which led many residents to flock to the pools.
Of those inspected, 19 were found to exceed proper levels for chlorine, urea and bacteria. And of those, 12 were found to have "severe problems." Authorities ordered those venues to shut down. They'll be allowed to reopen again after further tests confirm they meet health standards.

Additionally, 15 other pools were found to not have proper licenses. They were all fined, though not suspended.
The pools that failed health inspection tests mostly appear to have been indoors and operating inside apartment complexes, gyms, fitness centers or hotels.
