Ultra Nutrient Load: 4 Healthy Bowls at Salad+

Serving some of the healthiest bowls you'll find in Shanghai, we’ve found lately that SALAD+ is the best way to eat consciously. Now they've got seven locations around the city: iapm, Pudong's IFC mall, Hongqiao's The Hub, Xintiandi and the SWFC to name a few – all chosen for their proximity to business centres, meaning they're a go-to destination for office workers looking for no-bullshit bowls of salad, poke and smoothie that deliver the ultimate boost of high-nutrient ingredients.

This philosophy is what drives co-founders JJ and Karen, two local girls who spent time in New York City and Vancouver respectively, to establish SALAD+ after realizing a lack of healthy options in their home city.

At the core of SALAD+ is an enormous selection of whole food ingredients, shipped to each store every day. "All our ingredients are brought to the store fresh each and every morning. Our promise is that we replenish them every day, meaning that we never have to keep the ingredients overnight," JJ explains.

With dozens of ingredients available, the combination of flavors are nearly limitless. But if you want to take the expert’s advice, choosing from the nine salads on the menu is the way to go. For those watching their calorie intake, you can see exactly how much each salad contains, starting from 256 cals for the Hail Kale (RMB44, chia seeds, kale, apple, watermelon, dragon fruit, pickled cabbage, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, chick peas, feta and quinoa with honey balsamic vinaigrette).

Co-founder Karen tells us that the Farmer's Harvest (RMB55) is the most popular salad on the menu. Topped with sous-vide cooked flank steak, soft boiled egg, pumpkin, pickled beets, dried cranberries, corn, shredded carrot, cherry tomatoes on mixed greens, it's not hard to see why it's so popular. "We love having our proteins cooked sous-vide, as it really helps to keep the natural flavor and texture," says Karen.

More slow-cooked action takes place with the Omega Bomb (RMB48), a salad bowl that is positively bursting with nutrition, which includes sous-vide Norwegian salmon, pumpkin, green beans, capers, sesame, seaweed and cherry tomatoes on mixed greens.

Last but not least, we caught a glimpse of the SALAD+ poke bowl menu. The Cali Love bowl incorporates fresh salmon, avocado, seaweed, edamame, cashew, soy sauce, shredded carrot and ginger, drizzled with a spicy, soy wasabi sauce. On the bottom, you can choose between coconut multigrain, mixed greens or half and half.

As for drinks, SALAD+ offers fresh juices from RMB15-32, along with filling avocado-based smoothies, which are a great way to stay satisfied throughout the day until dinnertime. We like the Detox Water best (RMB35) for its refreshing fruit and herbal taste without the sugar of conventional juice. Best still, you can top it up with water and re-use the glass bottle after you're finished.

Ok, so how do you get your hands on a SALAD+? Find them at one of any of their seven locations, and be sure to follow them on WeChat (SALAD_PLUS) – where you can pre-order your meal and it'll be ready for you by the time you arrive to pick it up. Way to maximize that lunch break hour!
