Major franchise films and Oscar-nominated movies have secured July release dates in China. Catch these four films in theaters around town this month.

Despicable Me 3 (Now Playing)

Despicable Me 3

Steve Carrell’s Felonious Gru returns for the third installment of the Despicable Me franchise. Now a member of the Anti-Villain League, Gru must stop Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who can’t let go of the character he played in the 80s, from stealing a diamond and taking over the world. Things get complicated when Gru runs into his long-lost sibling, Dru, who wants him to return to his former life of crime. Bratt is voiced by South Park co-creator Trey Parker, and his moonwalking, shoulderpad-sporting villain seems like the movie’s highlight, along with the always-lovable minions.

Transformers 5: The Last Knight (Now Playing)

Transformers 5: The Last Night

The fifth film in the Transformers collection sees long-time enemies the Autobots and Decepticons at war as humans stand on the sidelines. Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Hopkins star in this action-packed robotic blockbuster. With Optimus Prime gone, the Autobots must delve deep into the secrets of the past in order to save the future. But what hidden secrets will they uncover about the history of Transformers on Earth?

Lion (Now Playing)

Lion Movie

Adapted from the book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierlley, this film tells the tale of what happens when when a five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta a long way from home. Sunny Pawar, who plays the young Saroo, makes it through many challenges and manages to survive. He is then adopted by an Australian couple, with Nicole Kidman, playing his adoptive mother, Mrs. Brierley. Years later, the 25-year-old Saroo, portrayed by Dev Patel, sets out to find his family. Nominated for an Oscar and other awards, this movie will show you the true story of a young man's journey home.

Manchester by the Sea (TBD)

Manchester by the Sea

The acclaimed drama that won Casey Affleck his first Oscar for Best Actor debuts in China this month, with all the artful seaside shots and heavy Boston accents that anyone could ask for. Set in the town of the same name just outside Boston,Manchester by the Sea tells the story of taciturn janitor Lee Chandler, who returns to his hometown to take care of his nephew after the unexpected death of his brother. As the plot unfolds through a series of flashbacks and the viewer learns the reason behind Lee’s erratic behavior, the movie becomes a devastating and poignant study in grief that critics raved about when it debuted last year.
