The 7th installment of market and festival Kick the Gong Around returns this weekend after a yearlong hiatus, bringing beachy vibes and some of Shanghai's best shopping, food and booze. KTGA launched four years ago as a fairly small-scale affair, and has since expanded into one of Shanghai's major lifestyle festivals.
The founders spent most of the last year outside of China traveling and studying, so KTGA had a fallow season this winter, but they've now all returned for this latest installment with new ideas about how to bring Shanghai's community of creatives together.
Ross & Brown
Their goal is to offer a market with an immersive theme for shopping and hanging out, bringing together independent fashion and lifestyle designers, food and beverage, performances, art interactions, workshops, lectures, charities and children’s areas.
This season, the festival will return to one of Shanghai's most unique and striking buildings, the former slaughterhouse 1933. Find out more about its Gothic columns and spiraling concrete staircases here.

Featured sellers at the festival include import brands like American Retro and Manish Arora, vintage vendors SHIMMY SHIMMY and SheYu (舍予), and local Shanghai designers such as Ross & Brown (pictured at top), AWU FINE JEWELRY and OKRA.

In addition to the shops, the beach theme will come alive thanks to palm trees, a Gracie's ice cream stand, local illustrators like Flabjacks and Tarbaby on-hand to draw portraits, and a dance floor with DJs. You can also expect bites from Shanghai vendors Tomatito, La Coyota, Eli Falafel and more, plus drinks from Estrella Galicia and Maeloc cider.
Details: July 1-2; 2-9pm Sat, noon-8pm Sun. 1933, see event listing.
