May 25: Russell Howard

British comedian Russell Howard makes his Shanghai debut this week. He is currently in the middle of his 'Round the World' tour, with which he broke Frank Sinatra’s record for most consecutive shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall. May 25: Phazz

SHFT brings up-and-coming producer Phazz to Le Baron for a set of bedroomy bass music. As is usual with these Le Baron shows, entry is free, but you'll need to either be on the list or show up early looking hip in order to get in.

May 25-26: Tao Dance Theater: 6, 7, 8

Tao Dance Theater’s founder Tao Ye has wowed critics and redefined modern Chinese dance with his experimental, minimalist choreography. The latest pieces in his “Straight Line Trilogy” are 6, 7, and 8, which further his exploration of movement with a dance devoted to the spine and live music accompaniment by folk-rock composer Xiao He.

May 25-June 3: Xintiandi Festival

This eclectic art and theater showcase from the Edinburgh Fringe Showcase returns to Shanghai for its second year, with 16 works from artist in China, the UK, France, Poland, Turkey and more. Highlights include an audio visual show called Van Gogh on Dark Water, Ebru Animation,a cappella group The Magnets and a digital dance performance called Digitopia.

May 26-27: Les Ballets Eloelle

One of the world’s few all-male ballet companies, Les Ballets Eloelle features drag performances from an international cast of dancers, bringing a fresh comedic twist on many classic ballet tropes.

May 26-27: Anna Karenina

The Lithuania Ballet brings their rendition of Anna Karenina to Shanghai. Renowned choreographer Anželika Cholina worked on the production, which brings a modern dance sensibility to the classic tale of romance and tragedy. See our feature on Anna Karenina here

May 27: ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival II: Chinese Improvisational Theatre

This free show as part of ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival 2017 brings together two of Shanghai’s largest Chinese improv teams, The Sesame Addicts from Zmack Shanghai and Jixingzhe Lianmeng, for a major showcase of impromptu comedy.

May 27: Immanu El

Swedish post-rock band Immanu El comes to Shanghai as part of a China tour from New Noise. Expect an atmospheric evening of brooding guitar and emotive lyrics from the Gothenburg-based group.

May 28: Dope Fiends

This Havana Club-sponsored party at Dope Shift offers free pina colada shots and tech-house beats by Kougar from Italy and Kepler from South Africa. The free booze is limited, so get there early.

May 28: Xiongguan Zhang Struggles Album Release Concert

Guitarist Xiongguan Zhang relocated to Shanghai a year and a half ago, and has been working on a dark and atmospheric album inspired by the city’s music scene ever since. Catch the release show for the finished album, Struggles.
