The rumors are true: Dongping Lu is the latest victim of Shanghai's Great F&B culling.
The restaurants and bars along the entire west length of Dongping Lu between Hengshan Lu and Wulumuqi Nan Lu are shutting down, sources tell That's Shanghai.
That includes Shanghai Brewery, Spice Bazaar and glo London cafe, gastro grill, bar and rooftop BBQ.
Gavin White, general manager of glo, told us their shutdown is effective today:
"I signed the termination of the lease [last week]. The army have [reclaimed] the premises... we are continuing with our franchisees and looking for a new premises. The Coffee Academics, which is a sister company, are looking for a new site imminently. We also have a central kitchen which we are expanding."
Last summer, we reported that the venues on the street were set to close as early as September of 2016 following the shuttering of Yongkang Lu. It appears the shutdown is finally happening.
When we stopped by the street earlier today, we found locked up doors and signs announcing "essential maintenance" at glo and Coffee Academics:
Spice Bazaar was completely cemented up:
The doors at Saffron and that one teppanyaki place appeared to have closed for good a long time ago:
And the giant brick wall enclosing Shanghai Brewery that suddenly popped up at the end of last month was painted bright yellow.
Luckily, it seems that popular cafe and bar Blackbird appears to still be flying, with a PUMA pop-up scheduled to run at the venue through next month.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
