Jan 15-17: Sidney Schutte Meets Wujie

After October’s vegetarian menu collaboration at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, the two-star Michelin chef will be coming to Shanghai to return the favor. For three nights, Chef Schutte will team with Wujie’s head chefs for an exciting culinary menu where East meets West and tradition meets contemporary. The gastronomic experience isn’t solely for vegetarians, but for all fans of innovative cuisine.

Jan 16-17: MDC

Despite rocking Yuyintang over the weekend, the pioneering hardcore group are still in town and playing a couple more shows. On Monday, frontman Dave Dictor performs an acoustic solo set at Uptown Records, as well as reading passages from his autobiography, MDC: Memoire from a Damaged Civilization. On Tuesday, the full group will be rocking Inferno with help from Texas and New Mexico anarcho-hardcore punk band The Elected Officials, as well as Shanghai faves Round Eye.

Jan 17: SideChef's Fifth Largest Potluck Charity Bash

Jan 17: Sidechef Potluck

The homegrown cooking app hosts Shanghai’s largest potluck twice a year. Participating vendors include Baoism, Bottles XO and more in this Martha & Snoop themed affair. Proceeds from raffle entry will go to charity. For more, check out our preview of the event.

The much heralded Russian National Ballet Theatre perform their hit adaptation of the Tchaikovsky classic that has been praised for its glamorous set that evokes the world of Imperial Russia.

Jan 20: Arrival

Best known for his acclaimed crime thrillers Prisoners and Sicario, rising French Canadian director Denis Villeneuve's first foray into sci-fi may be his most highest praised film yet. Academy Award winner Amy Adams gives a powerhouse performance as a linguist recruited by the military after 12 extraterrestrial spaceships appear across Earth.

Mr Ho

The label boss of Hong Kong’s Klasse Recordings makes his DADA debut spinning a disco set headlining the latest 12” of Fun party, with support from residents DJs Lindberg and Tobias Patrick.

Jan 20: OsunladeUNICO Shanghai welcomes back the Yoruba Records founder that’s been dubbed ‘the messiah of ancestral house music.’ After cutting his teeth working with R&B icons like Patti Labelle and Freddie Jackson, Osunlade has crafted a distinct style of Afro-Caribbean-inspired deep dancefloor beats. With 14 albums to his name, Osunlade is a highly sought-after remixer and is praised worldwide for his legendary DJ sets.

Jan 20-21: James AdomianKung Fu Komedy welcomes the Comedy Bang! Bang! staple. For years a respected stand-up who has appeared on Last Comic Standing and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Adomian’s star was boosted last year for his much loved impersonation of politician Bernie Sanders. Last year, he toured America as part of the Upright Comedy Brigade organized show, Trump vs Bernie. For more, check out our interview with James Adomian.

Jan 21: Ruth’s Record: The Diary of an American in Japanese Occupied Shanghai

Historic Shanghai has organized this illuminating talk by Betty Barr reflecting on her mother, Ruth Hill Barr’s experience as a long-time Shanghai resident that was placed in a Japanese internment camp following the city’s occupation in 1941. Barr will share stories from the book that includes full text of Ruth’s diary from that time written in secret during the camp years.

Chopin comes to life in this multimedia concert that pairs short films by award-winning animators that tell the story of Anna, her cousin Chip-Chip and their journey across Europe aboard a magical flying piano. Young Chinese pianist Tong Li will perform live.

The Ballet Flamenco de Madrid return to Shanghai with their rousing take on Georges Bizet’s famed opera that tells the tragic love story of a beautiful gypsy, an inexperienced soldier and the bullfighter caught in the middle.

Song Dong: I Don't Know the Mandate of Heaven

Chinese artist Song Dong’s first major solo exhibition at home in eight years will his  best-known works with several rarely exhibited pieces. Several pieces have been specifically commissioned by RAM for the show, including a transformation of the entire building overseen by Song.

Jan 22: Charity Gym Day at Shanghai Gymnastics

Shanghai Gymnastics hosts this fundraiser that will assist one of their member families that are currently struggling to come with the funds to provide cochlear implants to one of their children. Children of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in a one hour session, with all proceeds going to the family. 40 children per session maximum, so RSVP to shanghai.gymnastics@gmail.com to book a spot.
