If our New Year's hangover turns out to be anything like the mind-obliterating past year we just went through we are in for one hell of a wakeup on the first day of 2017.
And who wants to start off the new year like that?
So go on, raise up that solo cup up and get your MEGA party on, but give your future self a hand too and prep for that rude awakening come Sunday morning (yes, New Year's Day lands on a Sunday. 2017 is looking better already!).
And thank yourself for making it through the year without landing on this list.
1. Noms the word
A little hair of the dog you ask? Or, did you mean, Yo quiero Taco Bell”? Yeah, we get it. You wanted to detox during January. Us too, but sometimes you just need to go greasy. One day pass if needed, we'll give it to you after this year.
Check out our New Year's brunch guide (constantly being updated), which has a number of options for full on eats - and free-flow drinks - for the morning after, or our list of 12 brunches worth getting out of bed for. Note: free-flow favorite Bull and Claw is closed - don't head there, or your head will hurt even more. Good news, El Luch is back and pourin' the margs on YKL. Head there instead. If you are looking for free-flow in Jing'an though, Rooster does a solid RMB150 deal and they've got that going on all weekend.
Not ready to leave the house just yet? Plenty of delivery options are available for you hungover hermits, including Sherpa's, Meituan (Chinese only), e.le.me (Chinese only) and Waimai (also Chinese only).
Really desperate? Hit up 4007-518-518. That's the number for McDonald's, if you're really into instant gratification and can't be bothered with nutritional value. Say it. Remember it. Repeat. (And for God's sake, memorize that number to save yourself from the embarassment of having to add McDonald's to your contacts list).
2. Grab a brew
Late night out have you desperate for a different kind of buzz? Here are four new cafes that entered the scene this year, plus our favorite cafes in town. Bring your laptop along and scroll through last night's photos while listening to some new tunes while you're at it — headphones on, please. (Visitors might want to check ahead of time to check whether or not the cafes are open on New Year's Day).
3. Detox starts now
You're so over alcohol. Time for a detox. Lizzy's has been doing regular week-long smoothie cleanses, which you can sign up for by emailing Elizabeth@lizzysallnatural.com, or create your own through her shops where she also offers a variety of other healthy products to include detox teas.
V Cleanse has their juices and cleanse sets too, as well as their newly redone shopfront, which has everything from healthy snacks to wholesome healthy soups. FS Juice and Farmhouse Juice also offer juice detox sets, the latter serving up a variety of healthy snacks (like kale chips) too.
All the above have online delivery options too, but make sure to order in advance! Read more about each with our handy how-to juice guide.
4. Treat yo'self
Last night's decisions have you feeling a bit rough? Pamper yourself with a mani/pedi session or let a local spa work their magic with a relaxing massage. Check out our listings directory for the best Health & Beauty venues around Shanghai, including spas, massage places, nail salons and more in the city categorized by neighborhood. Note: in some cases you may need to book an appointment in advance.
Looking to reach that elevated mental state? Why not spend some time floating? Floatasian is a new-ish spa that uses epsom salts to let you float for an hour while your mind unwinds. (Warning: They don't allow you in if you're drunk).
5. Sohu and Chill
Get your TV show bingewatch on by heading over to Sohu's streaming site (tv.sohu.com). Or catch up on the 2016 hit list using our Top Highest Grossing Films in China (Part I) and (Part II) as your guide. (You might want to pre-plan this one too).
6. Party, Drink, Sleep, Repeat
Why try to fix what's already working for you? They say the best hangover cure is to keep drinking. Why not order a bottle of wine from BottlesXO one-hour delivery app to get your day started? (They're doing a 36-hour non-stop wine delivery until midnight and offering free beer until supplies runs out).
Shanghai's also got a whole slew of events going on this weekend, which just happens to be a public holiday. Check out our What's On for the week to get you going.
7. On second thought...
Maybe a little goal setting would do you well. Needing inspiration? Lululemon Shanghai's brand and community manager Flora Zhang talks goal setting. Just need a laugh? Check out this #tbt from our Tiger Father columnist who tells it like it is.
Good riddance 2016. We are so done with you.
