Speak Low Gang to Open New Cafe, Bar & Restaurant in Shanghai

New bar you say? Speak Low you say? News reaches us via DRiNK Magazine (seriously, check them out they have tons of good reads that us non-bar professional mortals can appreciate) that Shingo Gokan, the Japanese mixologist behind Speak Low will open a New York-inspired venue called Sober Company, and surprise, surprise, it will be anything but teetotal.

In-keeping with Speak Low, the venue will be divided into three parts, each with a nod to different districts of the Big Apple. The ground floor will be Sober Café inspired by the West Village, serving espresso, small plates and gourmet soft-serve ice cream consulted by pâtissier/blogger extraordinaire Cindy Wang

Upstairs the venue graduates to Sober Restaurant, inspired by the city's Chinatown. The chef will be Ka Tokumai, a "Taiwan-born, Japan-raised, NYC-trained chef" who will serve modern Chinese food that takes style notes from lauded concepts like Mission Chinese Food, Red Farm and Fung Tu.

Up another floor, the venue finally changes tack once again with a cocktail bar, Sober Society, inspired by the East Village. Vibe-wise the place will apparently be not dissimilar to the second and third floors of Speak Low, though there are rumors that, like Speak Low, a secret invite-only bar will be hidden somewhere on the premises.

Managing the place will be Atsushi Suzuki, also of Speak Low, who is bringing aboard an A-team of sommeliers, a music editor, and award-winning mixologists (some of whom will join from Angel's Share, the preternaturally cool NYC speakeasy at which Gokan spent 10 years working).

Sober Company will be situated at 99 Yandang Lu, and is due to soft open in mid-January.
