The place
Recently opened on Huashan Lu, Midnight Burger is a neighborhood eatery that slings fries, wings and burgers at roughly Carl’s Jr. prices. With a slogan that reads: “Thug flavors that punch hard and don’t apologize,” we rolled up with high expectations and empty stomachs.
The Food
The house signature ‘Midnight Burger’ (RMB45) is a tidy little number, and rather good for its meager price. The patty benefits from a light dusting of cumin, and is cooked to medium. Add an egg for the princely sum of RMB5, and be sure to specify that you want it cooked runny for Instagram #yolkporn purposes.
Surprisingly, it was the wholesome vegetarian burger (RMB40) that brought the most in terms of flavor. Packing sweet potato, quinoa, lentil spinach and tomato in one bun, the secret ingredient is fresh mint, lending a zingy and fresh flavor.
Fries are a little lackluster (though included in the price of your burger), but made delicious with the addition of Yunnan truffle mayo for RMB8. The chicken wings are also recommended for diners unburdened by caloric restraint; they’re coated in a bean curd crust and deep-fried to an enticing golden brown.
Food Verdict: 2/3
The Vibe
Being situated in an area with little foot traffic, Midnight Burger doesn’t have much in terms of atmosphere, thuggish or otherwise. When the place does get full, the staff of exactly two are run off their feet and the backlog of orders pile up.
Vibe verdict: 0.5/1
Value for Money
For local residents in the area, this place is a boon. Good quality, cheap hamburgers that’ll take you from cranky and ‘hangry’ to satisfied in under 45 minutes, and possibly with for less than RMB50.
Value for money: 0.5/1
TOTAL VERDICT: 3/5
Price: RMB45
Who’s going: young locals and expats
Good for: cheap eats, snacks, hamburgers, casual dining
