Two months after its birth, Shanghai's first homegrown giant panda has been given the name Hua Sheng. According to Shanghai Daily, the name was overwhelmingly chosen with 14,875 votes in a public poll. The name suggests healthy growth and fertility, but Hua Sheng has already been given the English nickname of 'Peanut.'

Currently weighing in at 3,280 grams and 52 centimeters long, Hua Sheng greeted twenty giant panda fans during the Mid-Autumn festival who presented her with toys and a swing. In addition, a giant pregnant panda You You arrived in the city from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Woolong in Sichuan Province, meaning Shanghai can expect a second panda cub, as early as the National Day holiday week.

Following approval from the State Forestry Administration of China, Shanghai was chosen along with Beijing and Guangzhou as sites for a giant panda preserve earlier this year.
