July 26-27&31: The Jungle Book

Acclaimed UK group Chapterhouse Theater bring their adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling classic to stages across China. Award-winning writer Laura Turner contributes the screenplay which includes a few new characters, with The Jungle Book wowing crowds across England and Ireland since its premiere three years ago. Best known as a member of K-pop superstars Super Junior and Super Junior-T, Kim has found additional success as an actor and as a media personality.

Live Nation’s Zai Live series of concerts kick off with the acclaimed singer that’s been described as “South Korea’s Adele.” Since finishing runner-up on the 2012 season of K-Pop Star Season 1, the now 19-year-old has won numerous awards, collaborated with stars like Epik High and is signed with K-pop monolith YG Entertainment.

July 27: Talib Kweli

The Brooklyn rhymer is a certified underground legend thanks to classic albums like his Black Star collaboration with Mos Def. He saved Echo Park last year in Shanghai capably headlining after his occasional partner in rhymed missed his flight. Expect the heads to fill up Le Baron for this surprise late booking.

The young singer-songwriter has been winning rave reviews around the globe thanks to her distinct take on modern pop. She’s scored number one albums from Australia to the UK. Her third album, Beautiful Lies, came out in January featuring hits ‘Keeping Your Head Up’ and ‘Wild Horses.’ Her Shanghai debut is part of Live Nation’s Zai Live series of shows at the recently reopened Majestic Theatre.

While technically open already, the NBA’s first ever children’s playzone officially launches with this special event. While details haven’t been released, the NBA Playzone features 10 themed areas including a wild Mascot Training Zone that the young kids will love. Stay tuned for our preview of the NBA Playzone.

Live Nation’s Zai Live series of concerts concludes with the Welsh rockers lauded as one of the UK’s best live bands. In a brilliant 20-year career, Stereophonics has topped the UK charts five straight times. They’re still at the top of their game, releasing their ninth disc Keep the Village Alive last year to great reviews.

Homegrown electronic label SVBKVLT releases its 10th proper disc, linking with one of Shanghai’s finest producers. Known for his eerie cold rap beats, Downstate will perform a live set in celebration of the EP Devil Worship You. Osheyack, Goooose, Swimful and Howell support.

A finalist  on the 2014 edition of Britain’s Got Talent has gone on to nab the plum choreographer role for Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity in Las Vegas. He brings his world tour to Shanghai and is offering four 90-minute workshops dishing on his distinct street jazz in heels style.

July 29-31: Cybertron Con

Transfomers has set numerous box office records in China but the world’s only official Trasformers con has a bit of a more old school feel. Peter Cullen, voice of Optimus Prime in the original cartoons, will sign autographs while fans will be dazzled by the vast number of toys, memorabilia and special attractions (including life-size Autobots and Decepticons) on site.

Since parlaying her impressive appearance on So You Think You Dance China into the creation of D.Lab three years ago, Duan Jingting has shown that Shanghai dancers can hold their own in the contemporary dance world. For their latest show, they’ve brought Wang Jianhui of the famed Nederlands Dans Theatre (NDT) home in their ongoing mission to work with revered dancers across the world. Until July 31: Alberto Giacometti Retrospective

Following the smashing success of Rain Room, Budi Tek’s Yuz Museum host this immense retrospective exhibition devoted to one of the 20th century’s greatest sculptors. Regarded as a modernist master, Giacometti had a profound impact on post-War art, earning the moniker ‘the artist of artists.’ 250 masterpieces created from 1917 to 1966 will be on display.
