Two foreigners, both identified as Brazilians studying in Shanghai, are in big trouble after recently being caught on video running a red light while riding a scooter. In the video, a traffic officer is seen chasing after them, and in doing so is almost hit by a car himself. On top of the dangerous infraction, the bike also didn’t have a license plate.

The police were able to track the driver down using CCTV footage. It was then they found his third breach of the law: he had no driver’s license.

The student’s name is being withheld from the public. He was still briefly interviewed by the press, to whom he explained, in Chinese, that he didn’t realize the light was red or that a license was required to ride a bike, and that he would have stopped had he seen the cop.

His sentence hasn’t been pronounced yet, but in the worse case scenario, he’d have to pay a RMB900 (USD140) fine and be detained for 15 days. This detention could also invalidate his student visa, meaning he’d have to leave the country within 10 days of his release.

Shanghai authorities are in the midst of a massive crackdown on traffic violations and have already issued thousands of fines to law-breaking pedestrians and motorists.
