As spring returns to Shanghai, the gentle fragrance of fresh flowers and green grass fills the air. At the same time, PizzaExpress’ new dishes are adding the aroma of traditional Italian ingredients along with Chinese-inspired flavors on their new starters, pizzas and more.
Since it’s getting warmer, PizzaExpress is experimenting with several protein and fruit pairings on the salad section of their menu. The Chicken and Apple Salad (RMB43) and the Duck and Orange Salad (RMB53, pictured below) are good ways to start your meal on a healthier note.
The most interesting pizza addition is the Char Siu Pizza (RMB92), one of Chef Rahim Mohammed’s proud creations for the spring/summer menu. This new dish celebrates Chef Rahim’s love for his Cantonese grandmother, who used to make char siu (honey glazed roast pork) for the chef and his brother when they were young.
This season also marks the mainland debut of the Lava Pizza (RMB128, pictured at top), which is the best-selling item at the chain’s Hong Kong outlets. While the toppings – Parmesan, cherry tomatoes, rosemary, basil and olives – sound very simple, the addition of burrata (made with mozzarella and cream) brings a dash of silky, creamy freshness to the combination. And since the main ingredient of the pie is made by hand, there’s a limited quantity per day available at each store. So hurry up and order one before it sells out!
