Town Crier! is random snippets of Shanghai news that just may have an effect on your life...
We hope you enjoyed that nice Chinese New Year vacation down in sunny Thailand, because it's about to get super chilly here in Shanghai, just in time for you to get back to work!
This morning the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a cold weather alert, stating that the city's temperatures are expected to plummet 9-11 degrees over the next 48 hours. Temperatures are expected to hit as low as 4 Degrees as yet another cold front blasts the city. Seems Shanghai just hasn't been able to catch a break this winter, with January being the city's coldest on record in 35 years.
There is an end in sight, however, as the cold front is expected to depart our fair city on Tuesday. (In the meantime, we'd recommend bundling up and cranking those space heaters all the way up).
Despite all the cold weather we've been experiencing, Shanghai Daily reports the city may see its earliest arrival of spring ever this year. If it turns out tonight's cold front arrives later than expected, that will bump today's average temperature up to 10 degrees. According to weather standards, the first day of a consecutive five days with average temperatures above 10 degrees officially marks "the Beginning of Spring." If the average temperature hits double digits, that means Shanghai will have been "in spring" since February 9. Additionally, the "Beginning of Spring" officially hit Shanghai on February 4. According to the city's 143-year-old weather records, this date usually falls on or around March 17.
