RIP Fortune Cookie Restaurant

It's a sad day for General Tsao as Shanghai's first American-style Chinese Resturant, Fortune Cookie, has just announced that they've decided to shut their doors on China for a new adventure in the US. Yesterday was the popular restaurant's last day of operation after four years in business.

Founder Fung Lam told That's he's leaving to start a family in America. Here's what Lam and cofounder Dave Rossi wrote on Fortune Cookie's official WeChat account yesterday:

In December of 2011, it all started as a short holiday to Shanghai between two friends. That small trip somehow turned into an amazing adventure and became the world famous restaurant, Fortune Cookie!

We made history by being the first American Chinese restaurant to open in China.  We introduced thousands to the beautiful taste of General Tsao’s Chicken, Pork Fried Rice, and Crab Rangoon.  We even made some Fortune Cookie originals like Mapo Tofu Cheese Fries and Smoky Dragon Wings.  Alas, we knew that one day the journey would have to come to an end.  We were recently given the opportunity for a new adventure back home that we simply could not pass up.  So it is now time to take our final bow and pen our final post.

Our mission was simple:  Do right by our guests and make them smile.  We approached every table with this mindset and hopefully that showed on your last and final visit with us.

The Fortune Cookie Family will be one that will always be remembered.  Thank you for all of your hard work over the years and for making Fortune Cookie such an amazing little gem.  Without you guys committed to our mission, we wouldn’t have been able to make our restaurant such a success.

We would like to note that we are leaving with a good conscience and are doing right by our staff and vendors.  We were truly lucky to have been part of such a great team, to have been able to serve so many amazing guests, and to have been part of such a great city.

In the beginning so many people doubted us and wondered when we would finally fail. Not only did we succeed, we even attracted competition! Unfortunately, our vacation simply had to come to an end. Like all great vacations, it’s always sad to say goodbye. Please look out for our next restaurant project back home in the United States!

Farewell, mapo tofu chili cheese fries. We miss you already.
