Oct 31-Nov 8: Shanghai International Literary Festival

Bibliophiles of the city, rejoice! The multi-faceted wonders of the written word are being made manifest once more, as literati from around the world alight in Shanghai to dazzle with their wit and wisdom. From a Pulitzer Prize winner and a master of modern fantasy, to a football-loving slam poet and a wild-eyed traveler wandering the Australian desert with camels, every creed of author is appearing at M on the Bund to pay homage to the delight of reading from October 31-November 8. Nov 1-7: Doc Guthrie's Movember Shave

Shanghai’s first American style barber shop is looking for a few good men to sign up for a Movember shave. Leave it on for the whole month and receive specials from Jing’an businesses like Bull & Claw, Le Cafe des Stagiares, Factory 5, Kaiba, Sumerian, The Shed, Wishbone and more. Best moustache awards and raffle draws will be held at the market with prices from URBN Hotel, Aboro Academy and more. All proceeds will go to the Movember Foundation, which has raised USD650 million in a dozen years, funding over 1,000 programs focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men’s health issues. They'll also be throwing the Manliest Market in town on November 29. This fundraising event will be hosted at a Hongqiao venue that holds classic cars and will features barbers, tattoos, classic cars, custom motorbikes, antique straight razors, menswear and food pop-ups. Nov 2-6: World Congress on Art Deco

This biannual celebration of everything Art Deco makes its Asian debut. The mornings will be filled with talks by experts on topics ranging from architecture to art and film to fashion. There will be walks showcasing the city’s startling Art Deco architecture across five different areas. Capping off a long day, congress participants will get a flavor of 1930s Shanghai at dinners in historic venues across the city, with some featuring vintage menus.

Nov 3: Shanghai Melbourne Cup Gala
Watch Australia's famed horse race live and in style. The Australian Shanghai Association takes over the stunning Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel, Pudong for a family-friendly gala. Enjoy canapes, a three-course meal and free flow drinks while the race is shown on the big screen. There will be a fashions on the field contest for sartorial standouts who rock their style, as well as raffles, sweepstakes and chances to win major prizes. After the gala lunch, guests are invited to stay for the famous after-party that goes from 3.30pm to late in the night. Registration begins at 9am.

Nov 3-4: Twelfth Night

Nov 4: Maze Runner 2

201510/Nov4-MazeRunner2.jpgThe second installment in the teen dystopian sci-fi action series has already grossed over USD240 million, while winning praise for its action scenes. The film follows a rag tag group of young people battling the powerful W.C.K.D. Organization, while trying to survive a desolate landscape full of danger. 


Nov 4: Ólafur Arnalds
201510/Nov4-OlafarArnauds.jpgThe Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer has won BAFTA awards for his electronic tinged indie-pop. He returns to China to launch the second year of the Contemporale series. This collaboration between perennially cool promoters Splitworks and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO) brings esteemed indie artists to the confines of the SSO’s concert hall for rare intimate shows. Other artists confirmed for the season are Julia Holter (Dec 3), John Grant (Mar 8), Destroyer (Apr 17), Damien Rice (May 22) and Lambchop (June 19).

Nov 4-8: HSBC Golf

201510/HSBCGolf.jpgAs golf moves away from the post-Tiger era, a crop of young talents are emerging to shake up the game. While 26-year-old Rory McIlroy remains the world’s top ranked player, he's facing stiff competition from upstarts like 22-year-old Jordan Spieth, who has captured two PGA majors this year, and 26-year-old Rickie Fowler, who won this year's Players Championships. All three will take part in the final World Golf Championship tournament of the year, but will face a tough field that includes seven of the world's top 10 players. Defending champion Bubba Watson will hope to repeat, while last year's runner-up Tim Clark will attempt to avenge his playoff loss. It's not all young'uns though, with established veterans like Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott also competing.

Nov 5: Media Dalí

201511/Nov5-MediaDali.jpgAfter attracting 350,000 visitors to last summer’s Master of Impressionism: Claude Monet, the K11 Art Foundation have teamed up with the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation for their next blockbuster show. Over 200 items were selected from over 4,000 artworks in the Figueres Dalí Archives, including 14 masterpieces like ‘Dematerialization Near the Nose of Nero.’ Dalí’s media work, including advertisements and magazine covers, as well as his creative tools will be displayed. Two complementing exhibitions explore Surrealism's historical and enduring influence on Chinese contemporary art.

Nov 5: Bollywood Extravaganza

The Indian musical brings the grandeur of Bollywood musicals to the stage. A visual extravaganza, the show has toured 11 countries where it’s been met with universal acclaim. The show follows a classic trope of love and jealousy. When Jai meets the beautiful Anjali during the festival of Holi, they quickly fall in love. However, their romance attracts the jealousy of the Don, who does everything to get in between them.

Nov 5: Postiljonen

201510/Nov5-Postiljonen.jpgYuyintang hosts another Scandinavian showcased headlined by the Swedish dreampop trio. Their soaring new single ‘Go!’ has been getting raves from tastemakers and Postiljonen will be joined by fellow indie-pop acts Pandreas and Siv Jakobsen.

Nov 5: Young Guru

Nov 5-Nov 8: The Devil’s Fables

Based on Aesop’s classic stories, this comedic musical follow three sinners who discover a much different version of hell than they imagined. They must participate in this hell carnival at the behest of Lucifer himself. The show is the first for Twisted Carousel Theatre and Paper Street Production, which are run by Shanghai stage veterans Tim College, Lexi Kalteis, Kaylie Keefe and Danny Wall. Nov 6: The Peanuts Movie

The 3D-animated movie will commemorate the 65th anniversary of the comic strip and the 50th anniversary of the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas. Snoopy will take to the skies in his greatest mission yet, while Charlie Brown will embark on his own epic quest. 


Nov 6: SHOKAY Sale

Nov 6: Kid Fresh

The Yeti crew bring in the three-time DMC Champion who has also won five national titles in Germany.A founding member of the infamous Lordz of Fitness turntablist crew, Kid Fresh has been releasing music lately on Diplo’s hip Mad Decent imprint. Nov 6-7: Le Cafe des Stagiaires (Yongkang Lu) 4 Years Anniversary

Yongkang Lu is going to get even extra sloppy this weekend as the original Le Cafe des Stagiaires celebrates its fourth birthday. Party kicks off on Friday night at 6pm and all-day on Saturday. DJ Kommi, DJ Cavia and Ekram will perform live with after-parties at the other Le Cafe des Stagiaires  locations.

Nov 6-8: Bicycle Film Festival

201510/Nov6-8-BikeFilmFestival.jpgFor 15 years, this traveling celebration of bicycles has visited over 60 cities, drawing over one million people. It touches down for the first time in China thanks to Factory Five. Four programs of short films from around the world will be screened, spanning documentary to comedy. There are plans for a photo exhibition and opening party on November with after-parties set for Friday and Saturday night.

Nov 7: Kids Hack Day

Hacking is becoming more popular in China and Quirkbot teams with the Swedish Consulate for a Kids Hack Day suitable for children aged 8 to 12. Participants will learn how to build and program robots straight out of their imaginations.

Nov 7: Bubba’s Chili Cook-Off

201510/Nov7-BubbasChiliCookoff.jpgBubba’s Chili Cook-Off celebrates its 10th anniversary on the grassy expanses of Wellington College’s outdoor playing fields. 30 competitors including Ruijin Cajun, Strictly Cookies and Bubba’s itself, will attempt to woo a crowd of thousands for the coveted prizes of ‘Best Chili’ and ‘People’s Choice Award.’ There will be plenty of booze vendors for the adults, while kids can enjoy activities like the on-site obstacle course. Three live bands will also perform. Tickets for the Cook-Off are RMB100, including a RMB50 voucher to be used for F&B purchases. Chili samples are free while supplies last. Nov 8: Shanghai Marathon

Registration for this year's edition has passed but you can be among the 300,000 people expected to attend and watch. This year's race once again starts at the Bund but has added Xintiandi Taiping Lake to its route before finishing off at Shanghai Stadium.

Nov 10-12: Taylor Swift

Last summer, T-Sizzle made her Shanghai debut on one of the last dates of her Red tour. So much has changed since her last visit. She's pretty much the biggest artist in the world right now, thanks to her much acclaimed and top-selling "pop" debut, 1989.

Nov 10-15: BMW Masters

201510/wuashun.jpgHomegrown stars Wu Ashun and Li-Hao Ting will attempt to be the first local players to capture this prestigious title (and its USD7 million purse). However, they have to overcome a crowded field that includes defending champion Marcus Siem, former US Open winner Graeme McDowell, the people's champion Ian Poulter and 24-year-old prodigy Patrick Reed, who is one of five players to capture three PGA titles at such a young age. Nov 11: The Dating Monologues

Nov 11-29: Nanta

Three cooks are on the clock to finish preparing a wedding banquet when the manager installs his incompetent nephew in the team. What follows is a mix of acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomine and audience participation set to traditional Korean samul nori music. Mostly non-verbal, the show is becoming a world-wide hit with over 9 million attendees and high profile runs on Broadway, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Macau’s Sands Theatre.

Nov 12: Bistro Burger Belt-Buster Challenge

Since stunning judges on So You Think You Can Dance China, Duang Jingting has been building up a name for her homegrown contemporary dance company D.LAB. Three years since their debut, they move to their biggest stage yet, premiering their newest show Fragile at Shanghai Grand Theatre.

This all-woman production is a showcase and celebrations of the many manifestations of ‘her.’ Expect a flirtatious and mysterious show that fuses dance, musical theater and seduction. Nov 13-15: Shanghai International Children’s Book Festival

Top selling English language titles like The Magic School Bus and Goosebumps will be available, while publishers will be showcasing the future of the industry with picture books containing 3D pages and other digital content. There’s material available for the very young (My First Discovery) up to teens (the Twilight series).

Nov 14: Pac-12 China Game 

201510/pac12.jpgThe NCAA takes over the Mercedes-Benz Arena to host its first ever regular season game played in China. The historic matchup pits the Washington Huskies against the Texas Longhorns. One of the most consistent teams in recent years, Texas has made an appearance in 23 of the last 26 NCAA tournaments, producing current NBA AllStars Kevin Durant (pictured above) and LaMarcus Aldridge. They will battle against the always pesky Washington Huskies that have produced fiery little point guards like current NBA stars Isiah Thomas and Nate Robinson.

Nov 14: Chi Fan for Charity

Chi Fan for Charity (CFFC) will look to top last year’s massive success when 58 restaurants participated to raise over RMB300,000 for local charities. This year, confirmed restaurants include NAPA Wine Bar and Kitchen, M on the Bund, The Commune Social, el Willy and other foodie favorites. Each restaurant will donate a table of 10 and guests pay a set price covering a three-course meal, beverage pairings and entrance to the ultra-fun after party. Nov 14: Nakoma

The Beijing-based trio has made a major mark on the music scene with their furious self-titled debut. They'll be bringing their noisy instrumentals across the nation, bringing their national tour to On Stage. The venue will also be hosting another top national act when the Nachang death metal standouts Zuriaake bring their national tour to celebrate the newly released Gu Yan to On Stage on November 8.

Nov 14: Asia Vibes 4th Anniversary

She’ll be making the trip from her current base in Berlin bringing her elegant mix of deep house and techno. Local favourites DJ Doggy, Max Shen and Yoshinaga will support, with VJ Keefer providing visuals.

Nov 15: DâM-FunK

Since cutting his teeth as an in-demand musician in the early-90’s West Coast G-funk scene, DâM-FunK has been recruited by rappers like Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip and MC Eiht. He’s connected to a new generation of partiers thanks to recent releases on the celebrated Stones Throw label. Santo Chino and others will guest, with tickets limited to strictly 400.

Nov 15-Jan 17: War Horse

Since its 2007 premiere at London’s National Theatre, War Horse has become one of the world’s most celebrated plays. Productions have picked up Laurence Olivier Awards, swept the 2011 Tony Awards and inspired a hit 2011 film helmed by the legendary Steven Spielberg. Years in the making, the National Theatre Company of China debuted a Mandarin version in Beijing for a months-long run. The show continues its national tour, making its Shanghai debut and taking over Shanghai Culture Square until mid-January.

Nov 16-18: La Bayadere by Mariinsky Theatre

The legendary Saint Petersburg theater has cultivated world-class ballet masters like Galina Sergeyevna Ulanova and Rudolf Nureyev, while serving as the site where Tchaikovsky’s classics Swan LakeThe Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker made their world premieres. They revisit their rich history with this show that premiered in 1877. Adapted from the Indian poetic drama Shakuntala and choreographed by Marius Petipa, La Bayadère tells the tragic love story between temple dancer Nikiya and warrior Solar, set to a vibrant Indian backdrop. The show will be a grand and fitting close to the festival.

Nov 19: Shanghai Souls charity photography showcase

Shanghai Global Shapers is an initiative of the World Economic Forum. They launch their first community project in the city and are inviting photographers to participate by submitting work under the ‘Shanghai Souls’ theme. 75 works will be chosen, printed out and displayed at Liquid Laundry. People can take photos home with a donation that benefits Eden Ministry, a rehabilitation center for Asia’s red-light districts. For more, check out our details on how to partcipate.

Nov 20: The Hunger Games - Mockingjay, Part 2

The titular Games are over as Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) leads a resistance to finally topple the fat cats in the capital.

Nov 20: Tribute to Stevie Wonder

Soul singer Denise Beningfield serves as musical director, recruiting some of the city’s best musical talent. Expect to go on a musical journey through the soul legend’s life, from his time as a harmonica wielding teen prodigy responsible for ‘Fingerprints,’ through his iconic 1970s era where he released classic album after classic album to his latter-day hits like ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You.’ For more vintage Stevie, check out his awe-inspiring Sesame Street performances of 'Superstitious' on YouTube and Youku, as well as a talk-box assisted take on '1-2-3' on YouTube and Youku.

Nov 20: Neon Indian
201510/Nov20-NeonIndian.jpgThe synth-wizard is (in)famous as one of the faces of chillwave, the downtempo electro-pop sound that was all the rage a few years ago. He’s managed to outlast the genre by going darker for 2011’s Psychic Chasms. However, it sounds like Neon Indian will be in joyous form, touring China to support his new disc, VEGA INTL. Night School. Developed over four years, it’s an album full of funky guitar lines, Balearic rhythms and his most elaborate songwriting yet.

Nov 20: China Drifting Festival

This year’s edition features German electronic live trio Brandt Brauer Frick (BBF) collaborating with Pet Conspiracy’s wild frontman Huzi and RE:TROS’s Hua Dong. Nov 21: The Big Wave

The young electronic post-punk trio have taken over the Beijing music scene with a sound indebted to acts like Joy Division, Kraftwerk and The Cure. They’re signed to Modern Sky and have performed on the big stage at festivals like Strawberry and Echo Park. They’re embarking on a 30-city national tour to celebrate the release of their new single and music video, Fill In.

J-Fever is one of China’s most respected emcees, while Soulspeak has toured the world as one-half of WordySoulspeak. These two pillars of Beijing hip hop continue their fruitful partnership on their second collaborative disc, Colour Blind. Released on Douban’s D-Force Records, the album is a funky look at love. The duo are bringing their national tour to On Stage. Expect J-Fever to bring his trademark energy and be prepared to be amazed at how smoothly Soulspeak swings from the turntables to the guitar. A stunning visual show will accommodate.

Nov 21: Shanghai 48 Hour Film Project screenings

Nov 25: The Martian

Related to jazz legends John, Alice and Ravi Coltrane, Flying Lotus lives up to the family legacy with his potent mix of Los Angles underground and experimental IDM; filtered through a free jazz sensibility. His latest album You’re Dead featured Kendrick Lamar, Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. It won universal critical acclaim while cracking the Billboard Top 20. Even more exciting is that the producer will be bringing his epic live A/V set-up with him to QSW Culture Center for his Mainland debut.

Expect a night to sample all the soulful shades of funk.
