A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:

1. Affect/Effect: Transformation in the Work of Li Wei

201510/liwei.jpgThe Beijing-based artist presents her latest works. Using her trademark layered style, she reconstructs China’s landscapes by enlarging photos of scene and then layering paint over it to return it to recognition.

// Oct 23-Dec 31. Art +, see event listing.

2. Sebastião Salgado: Genesis

201510/sebastiaosalgado.jpgIconic photojournalist Sebastião Salgado brings his massive solo show to the Shanghai Natural History Museum. Genesis features 245 original works and is the result of an eight-year journey through 32 different countries, as far south as Antarctica, where he documented chinstrap penguins parading across icebergs and as far north as Siberia, where he trekked alongside the indigenous Nenet people as they herded reindeer across the tundra. The exhibition is presented in five broadly defined ecosystems: ‘Planet South’, ‘Sanctuaries, Africa’, ‘Northern Spaces’ and ‘Amazonia and Pantanal.’ So far, over three million people have seen the exhibition during its world tour.

// Oct 23-Dec 20 (Tues-Sun), 9am-5.15pm, RMB30. Shanghai Museum of Natural History.

3. Shanghai Souls Charity Photo Showcase

Shanghai Global Shapers is an initiative of the World Economic Forum. They launch their first community project in the city and are inviting photographers to participate. Anyone can submit work under the ‘Shanghai Souls’ theme by October 30. 75 works will be chosen, printed out and displayed at Liquid Laundry on November 19 at 7.30pm. People can take photos home with a donation that benefits Eden Ministry, a rehabilitation center for Asia’s redlight districts.

// Submissions accepted until October 30. Participants can submit 1-3 photos (300DPI, 2480x3508 pixels) to either shapershanghaiphotos@yahoo.com or electriczoo on WeChat. Name photos under the format YOURNAME_PHOTO# and provide your WeChat username and phone numbers with your submissions.
