Sep 30, Oct 17&31: Shanghai SIPG home games

shanghaishenhua.jpgThe China Super League return from its holiday break for three more games. After dropping last month’s highly anticipated duel against Guangzhou Evergrande, Sven and the boys find themelves in the midst of a four-way battle for the top three spots. While they’re sitting two point back of Guangzhou for the top spot, Shanghai control their destiny barely ahead of Beijing and Shandong. They’ll host Shijiazhuang on October 17 and cap off their season with an October 31 bout against Liaoning.

Sep 30: Do Hits Takeover

With two compilation releases over the summer, Beijing’s Do Hits continue to ride high. They take over the Shelter and present the live debut of member Jason Hou, with supporting DJ sets from Howie Lee, Guzz and Billy Starman. Veeky presents the visuals. Oct 1-2: Voice of China Festival

The Voice of China Festival (with Momo Wu)

The mega-hit show has spawned a music festival, featuring some of their most beloved participants including Momo Wu. Other notable acts include Della Ding and Li Qi. Expect group performances from the singers. For more Momo, check out our feature on her super producers, Mr. Fantastic.

Oct 1-3: MIDI Electronic and Rock Festival

MIDI (Dr. Elektroluv)

The Mainland festival perennial is back in Taihu for a late-summer edition of their mega-fest. There will be six different stages with five international electronic headliners – Dr Lektroluv (pictured above), Sulumi, Jozef K, Thomas Schumacher and Ralf Kollmann. There’s an additional 80 local DJs and producers including pretty much all your Shanghai favorites. There will also be rocking acts with Voodoo Kungfu performing on Oct 1, New York hardcore favorites Sick of It All on Oct 2 and Finnish metal act Children of Bodom on Oct 3. Camping is allowed in the park.

Oct 1-5: 2015 Shanghai International Tattoo Festival

World Tattoo Events (WTE) is bringing one of their renowned tattoo conventions to Shanghai. Internationally renowned tattooists will be on-site showcasing their art, with thousands expected to attend.

Oct 2: Ranking Joe

rankingjoe.jpgNewly refurbished, The Shelter kicks off their Golden Week weekend by welcoming the legendary Jamaican vocalist. The Kingston born signer released his debut single 40 years ago and has slayed countless releases with his trademark speedy tongue twisters. He’ll be joined by Shanghai’s finest reggae and dancehall selectors and vocalists like Jado, DJ Maze, Skinny Brown, Howell and LaoBang. The show will also feature the first ever live performance between Ranking Joe and Shanghai’s ChaCha of their 10” vinyl release, ‘One Day You Will Know.’

Oct 3: Lola 5th Anniverary - John Acquaviva

johnacquaviva.jpgTo celebrate their milestone birthday and more than 7,280 hours of good music, Lola is going wild all month long by booking some of the world’s most respected DJs and producers. Things kick off on October 3 with Canadian techno icon John Acqaviva, followed by German electroclash star DJ Hell (Oct 10), live house favorites Supernova (Oct 16), Mannheim based A&R, DJ and producer Alex Flatner (Oct 17), Australian-Turkish tech house favorite Murat Kilik (Oct 23), mysterious duo Kotellet & Zadak (Oct 24) and the ever-infectious Till Von Sein (Oct 30). Things cap off with a Halloween/birthday rager on October 31.

Oct 3-4 Budweiser STORM Electronic Music Festival

It’s been an amazing ascent for the Shanghai EDM megafest. Paris Hilton was among the 24,000 people who partied hard during the inaugural 2013 edition, while last year’s attracted 35,000 people. This year looks even bigger with a star-studded line-up. While Avicci has once again pulled out, the line-up still includes three-time DJ Magazine’s No. 1 DJ Tiesto, Skrillex, Paul Oakenfold, Flo Rida, A-Trak, Laidback Luke, Blasterjaxx, DVBSS and so much more. The organizers will also be hosting the first International Music Summit China on October 2.

Oct 4-6 Simple Life Festival

Simple Life Festival

Originating from Taiwan, this music festival packed Expo Park last year in its inaugural Shanghai edition. Now, it’s back again with Taiwanese pop star Zhang Zhenyue (pictured above) and indie-folk Mainland acts like Wu Tiao Ren on the bill. Last year’s edition featured pop-reggae icons UB40, post-punk pioneers Television and Mando-pop star Hebe from SHE, so expect a few more big names to come up over the next couple of weeks.

Oct 5: DNKL

New Noise is bringing Europe’s new electronic ambient sensation on their first China tour. Their mesmerizing dark electronic pop has been winning raves on tastemaking blogs while the group has wowed at major festivals like Rocksilde.

Oct 6: Inside Out

201509/insideout.jpgPixar’s latest smash takes audiences literally inside the mind of a young girl who is struggling with the feelings of moving to a new city. Comedy stars like Saturday Night Live alums Amy Poehler and Bill Hader, The Daily Show’s Lewis Black and The Office’s Phyllis Smith and Mindy Kaling voice five of the girl’s emotions personified as she deals with her new environs. Released in the summer, Inside Out has been a global hit raking up nearly USD750 million worldwide. Critics and families are enamored with its touching tale, a worthy follow-up by director Pete Docter to his 2009 tear jerker Up.


Oct 6: Solaris

Sub-Cinema moves to its new home at The Shelter and kick things off with Andrei Tarkovsky’s renowned sci-fi epic. The 1972 film is set on a base on a planet. When one of the three scientists mysteriously disappears, a psychologist is sent to replace him, and he encounters the baffling nature of alien intelligence. Also on tap this month are the 1993 horror anthology Body Bags (Oct 13), the 1980 samurai classic Shogun Assassin (Oct 20) and the 2007 Spanish contemporary horror REC (Oct 27).

Oct 8: Megadeth

The American thrash metal legends rose alongside Anthrax, Metallica and Slayer as the genre’s “big four” that took the music to unforeseen heights in the early 90s. 30 years after releasing their game-changing debut Peace Sells... But Who’s Buying?, Dave Mustaine and the boys are jetting around the world celebrating their legacy. The 11-time Grammy nominees are revered for their ferocious sound and heavy lyrics that tackle subjects from war to death. They’ve sold over 50 million records worldwide and are finally making their Mainland debut after a couple of past attempts were scuttled last minute.

Oct 9: Carcass

Painkiller Magazine celebrates their 15th anniversary by bringing one of the most revered grindcore bands of all time to MAO Livehouse. The British extreme metal legends routinely headline festivals around the world and will be playing plenty of tracks from their death metal tinged recent disc, Surgical Steel

Oct 9: Ryan Hemsworth

RyanHemsworth.jpgS.T.D. presents the rising Canadian producer, who is still basking in the acclaim of last year’s Alone for the First Time. Grimes, Frank Ocean and Cat Power are among the stalwart artists that have recruited Hemsworth for remix work.

Oct 9: Sulumi

sulumi.jpgFor years a force in Beijing’s electronic underground through his Shanshui label, the now Tokyo based producer returns to the mother land with a new album. With assistance from Vice, Sulumi presents Unconsciousness. MHP, DJ Doggy and Jackie supports.

Oct 9-11: The Train Driver

Tony Lifetime Achievement Award winning playwright Athol Fugard is legendary for his searing anti-Apartheid works created during that perilous time. His works are being presented in China for the first time thanks to Chen Wencong International Theater Company. The series concludes with The Train Driver. Based on a true story, it follows a train driver haunted by an unintentional accident. He meets an old gravedigger who helps him unburden his conscience. Oct 10: Proximity Butterfly

Since forming a dozen years ago in Chengdu, multicultural quartet Proximity Butterfly have crafted a psychedelic sound that mixes ancient Chinese instruments with hard rock akin to Jane’s Addiction and Led Zeppelin. On their newest disc, Medusae, they show off their softer side. Released on Maybe Mars, the album is inspired by frontman Joshua C. Love’s relationship with his mother. Label mates and Shanghai stalwarts Duck Fight Goose opens.

Oct 11-18: Rolex Tennis Masters 

201509/shanghairolexmasters.jpgAs the only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament held outside of Europe and North America, the Shanghai Rolex Masters features a star-studded draw. Seventeen of the world’s top 20 ranked tennis players will take part, including current number one, Novak Djokovic. The Serbian is riding high after winning last month’s US Open and will attempt to capture a record third Shanghai title. However, the tournament’s defending champion Roger Federer may have something to say about that. Also in the mix is Rafa Nadal and two-time Shanghai champion Andy Murray. Top seeds get a first round draw with the second round kicking off on October 13. There will also be doubles.

The 14th Shanghai French Week is back! Taking place on the pedestrian street of Yandang Lu as usual, this large scale French event of the year sees French fashion, French designs and all of the traditional food you could think of including baguettes, pastry, cheese, wines and.

Oct 13-21: Shanghai Fashion Week

Shanghai Fashion Week is back October 13-21. One of the most dynamic and vibrant fashion weeks in Asia, the nine fast and furious days of styles are set to showcase the best of China’s growing cluster of local talent. Shows are by invite only, but start pulling your cards now and you never know.

Oct 13-Nov 2: Olivier Widmaier Picasso – Revealed

201509/revealed.jpgAs Pablo Picasso’s grandson, Olivier Widmaier Picasso had intimate access to the world’s greatest modern artists. Revealed shows such masters as Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso himself at work, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic process of these greats. The exhibition is in the midst of a world tour that has already wowed North America.

Oct 14: NBA Global Games Shanghai

201509/nbaglobalgames.jpgThe NBA returns to Mercedes-Benz Arena for its 20th preseason game held in Chinese mainland in the past decade. This game pits the star-studded Los Angeles Clippers who are led by point guard Chris Paul, power forward Blake Griffin and new addition Paul Pierce. They’ll take on the Michael Jordan owned Charlotte Hornets whose new back-up point guard Jeremy Lin remains a folk hero from his Linsanity days. Expect a raucous crowd and an impressive number of guests as the NBA always does its China visits right.

Oct 15-24: Oktoberfest

Paulaner’s flagship location on Fenyang Lu is hosting their annual festivities, offering up home-brewed Paulaner Oktoberfest beer and traditional treats, soundtracked by a band flown in from the original Munich Oktoberfest. There are special three-course set Oktoberfest packages for groups of a minimum six people available with 24-hour advanced reservations for RMB248 (Sunday or Monday) or for RMB288 (Tues-Thurs) with free flow Paulaner beer until 10.30pm. The same package is available daily for RMB358 with free flow until midnight. A special à la carte menu filled with Oktoberfest favorites are available for smaller groups.

Oct 16: Ant-Man

In the 12th release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Anchorman’s Paul Rudd stars as an engineer-turned-petty crook who acquires a suit that shrinks him in size while increasing his strength. When he’s caught, the suit’s creator turns the tables and recruits him to take control of the suit and protect it from his former protégé who deigns to use the technology for no good. Released in the summer, Ant-Man is Marvel’s 12th straight box-office topping film, winning praise for its unique action sequences and its playful sense of humor.  


Oct 16: Sosupersam

sosupersam.jpgThe ascending DJ and producer is among the new faces of Cali’s hip hop resurgence. She’s toured with Childish Gambino and Danny Brown, while also support legends like Erykah Badu. The former dancer for Miley Cyrus is now Vanity Fair’s favorite DJ, while remaining affiliated with underground label Soulection.

Oct 16-17: DC Benny

A heavy weight in New York’s cutthroat comedy scene, DC Benny has wowed crowds at the famed Apollo Theater while delighting fans of Last Comic Standing. An actor who had a recurring role on soap opera As the World Turns, the multi-talented funny man makes his Shanghai debut with the Kung Fu Komedy club.

Oct 16-18: Shanghai International Beer Festival

This massive celebration of beer is back for the fifth year running. Peruse over 200 beer brands from around the globe, with organizers Bevex Marketing supplying sounds from some of the city’s top DJs and a lively atmosphere that seemingly attracts the entire city.

Oct 16-24: The Quest of the Golden City

barrougeanniversary.jpgThe six-time That’s Shanghai Food & Drinks award winner Bar Rouge is celebrating their anniversary in their trademark style. They’re inviting guests to teleport in space and time recounting over six action-packed nights. The Great Departure kicks off on October 16 in an all-white dress code affair, followed by a Crocodiles Bay themed party the next night. Things resume on Oct 21 with The Gran Bermudas Mystery, followed by the jungled themed Sisters of the Sacred Forest night (Oct 22), The City of Gold (Oct 23 – dress code: a touch of gold) and finally caps off with formal wear themed A Triumphant Return.

Oct 17: SAS 21st Annual International Fair

Over 4,000 people are expected to attend Shanghai American School’s annual international fair. There will be a variety of family-friendly activities like a pumpkin patch, bouncy castle, laser tag, super slides and 60 game booths to choose from. The outdoor marketplace will feature 40 vendors serving up a variety of cuisine from around the world. The ever popular used book sale returns, and there will be performances by student choirs, school bands and cultural dancers. Oct 17: Aboro Academy Knockout III

Former undefeated women’s boxing champion Michelle Aboro has been holding court in Shanghai for the past few years, training amateur fighters at her Aboro Academy. They’ll spar for the public in the third edition of this fight night with proceeds going to the Aboro Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the belief that physical training is an effective means of improving prospects for disadvantaged young people by building character, confidence and self-esteem.

Oct 17: Echoes of Eternity

echoesofeternity.jpgRenowned choreographer Patrick de Bana and the Shanghai Ballet have created this stirring piece based on the Chinese poem Song of Everlasting Sorrow. The ballet follows the tragic romance between Tang dynasty Emperor Xuanzong and his beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan. The show returns to Shanghai Grand Theatre, where it made its world premiere last year. For more, check out our feature on the show.

Oct 17: Le Baron One Year Anniversary

The trendy Parisian import has burst onto the Shanghai party scene, even nabbing Best New Club distinction at this year’s That’s Shanghai Food & Drink Awards. They’re officially celebrating their first birthday with a rager. While they’re keeping details under wraps right now, expect it to be stylish with a potential special guest spinning.

Oct 17: Steve Aoki

Yes, the electro DJ is back in Shanghai again, cake undoubtedly in hand. But it’s that relentless hustle that has made Aoki rise from the underground’s hardest working man to the Top 10 of DJ Magazine’s prestigious Top 100 DJ list. Recently, the Grammy nominated producer released his two-part Neon Future albums and crafted the soundtrack to the horror film The Hive. Still, there’s no rest for Aoki, staying true to the title of his upcoming documentary, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead

Oct 17-18: JZ Festival

JZ Festival

With 11 years in the game, the JZ Festival has consistently been one of the city’s top music events. Sprawling over nine stages at picturesque Expo Park, it’s a celebration of jazz in all its different forms. This year’s headliners include funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire Experience featuring the Al Mackay All-Stars, multi-platinum UK singer Joss Stone, bass god Victor Wooten, multi-instrumentalist Lord Echo, Taiwanese singer-songwriter Crowd Lu and Shunza, who is teaming up with hometown 10-piece funk group Red Groove Project. Also don't forget to catch standout Shanghai-based acts like Jonas Seetoh, RTM and other JZ Club favorites getting their time on the big stage.

October 17-18: 2015 Motour Live

Motour Festival (with Top Floor Circus)

One of Shanghai’s most famed singer-songwriters Wang Hao has organized this two-day festival that celebrates music and vintage cars. Expect to see a showcase of some exotic vehicles while top acts like Taiwan’s rap god MC Hot Dog, Shanghai rock legends Top Floor Circus (pictured above), Singaporean troubadour Chen Huanren and former Beyond member Steve Wong will perform.

Oct 17-18: Cloud Gate 2

Taiwan’s Lin Hwai-min is an international icon in contemporary dance for his groundbreaking Cloud Gate group. Founded in 1999, its junior company Cloud Gate 2 has furthered its artistic reach by performing original works by innovative young choreographers. Oct 17-21: Theo Croker 

201509/oct17-21-theocroker.jpgThe Afro-Physicist returns to his old stomping grounds. The trumpeter was a major force in Shanghai’s jazz scene for years, serving as the first Artist in Residence at the Fairmont Peace Hotel while tearing through numerous raucous shows at places like JZ Club. Signed by legendary singer Dee Dee Bridgewater to her DDB Records, Croker’s last disc made number two on the Jazz Week charts. He’ll be hosting the JZ Festival AfterParty Jam Sessions on Oct 17-18 and will perform a headlining gig at JZ Club on Oct 21, with support from RTM.

Oct 18: Sylvie Guillem - Life in Progress

The legendary dancer celebrates a brilliant career that has stretched across three decades. An iconic performer with the Paris Opera Ballet, Guillem takes the stage one last time with her final dance program. Life in Progress features her dancing two new works. The Olivier Award winner will also perform Mats Ek’s poignant Byethat was made especially for her.

Oct 20: What happened, Miss Simone?

201509/whathappenedmisssimone.jpgThis critically acclaimed documentary explores the legendary jazz singer Nina Simone at a time where she became an impassioned pillar of the civil-right movement following the 1963 bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama. The documentary mixes unreleased archival footage and interviews with Simone’s family and friends, crafting a fascinating portrait of the singer and the toll that controversies caused by searing songs like the banned ‘Mississippi Goddamn’ had on her life and art.

Oct 20-24: Mauro Colagreco visits Unico

The two-Michelin starred chef returns to Shanghai where he will stop by his That’s Shanghai Food and Drinks Award winning Latin restaurant and lounge Unico. Oct 20-25: Hamlet by Urban Aphrodite

Urban Aphrodite kicks off their third season by tackling their first proper Shakespeare play. They’ll be imprinting their unique stamp on Hamlet, setting it in a motorcycle club setting while incorporating disparate influences like 1920s Hollywood and Japanese anime.

This high-voltage theatrical experience breathes new life into traditional dances like the Viennese Waltz and Foxtrot. Burn the Floor explodes with jaw-dropping choreography, searing in the passion of the tango and pasaa doble and reveling in the sheer energy of the Cha Cha, the Samba, Rumba and Jive. The breathtaking moves and heart-pounding music creates a dramatic show that Heat Magazine declares “will have you leaping out of your seat to join in.”

Oct 21: Ulysses Owens Quartet

Oct 23: Miles ‘Musicman’ Tackett and Soulspeak

MusicManMiles.jpgSoul Crates features this killer double bill. As the driving force behind Breakestra, Music Man Miles is lauded for his all-vinyl funky soul-jazz sets. A revered figure in the California party scene, he’ll be joined by Beijing based producer Soulspeak. Revered as one of the country’s best beatmakers, Soulspeak has found magic in his recent collaborations with perhaps China’s most revered MC, J-Fever. V-Nutz and the Soul Crates Crew supports.

Oct 23-24: 8 by Tao Dance Theater

Known as pioneers of Chinese contemporary dance, the Tao Dance Theater were the first contemporary dance company from China to perform at the Sydney Opera House. They will launch the world premiere of their newest show, 8. It’s the latest in a series that explores pushing one’s body to its extremes. Unlike past shows, 8 will ditch a narrative approach for an audio concept, suggesting an attempt to make sounds visible to the audience.

Oct 23-25: Australian Ballet

The Australian Ballet has enjoyed a special relationship with China as one of the first foreign performers to visit with their 1980 tour. They're making their first trip in nine years and are doing it in style, bringing their hit 2013 show Cinderella for its international premiere. Choreographed by the Bolshoi Ballet's former Artistic Director Alexei Ratmansy, Cinderella takes place in post-war Russia, circa 1945. It's one of the hottest tickets in Australia and the Shanghai Grand Theatre shows will serve as a test run for a potential international tour next year. The group will also perform a Mixed Program on September 25 with three pieces that veer from classical to contemporary ballet. Keep an eye out for Guo Chengwu. The former winner of So You Can Think You Can Dance China? was recently promoted to Principal Dancer and is considered a rising young star in ballet.

Oct 24-25: Momix: Bothanica

The inventive dance-illusionist group make their Mainland debut bringing their 2008 hit Bothanica to Shanghai Daning Theatre. This colorful show is inspired by the cycle of natures, mixing imaginative costumes with an eclectic score that mixes bird songs, Peter Gabriel and Hindi beats.

Oct 27: The Taming of the Shrew

tamingoftheshrew1.jpgTNT Theatre Britain returns to the Lyceum Theatre with an adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. The Taming of the Shrew follows Petruchio’s attempts to woo the headstrong Katherina. The globetrotting theater group has established itself as a Mainland staple with company founder Paul Stebbings receiving an MBE in 2013 for his cultural efforts in China.

Oct 28-29: Three Masters of 20th-Century Art by Martha Graham Dance Company

Described by the Washington Post as “one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe,” the Martha Graham Dance Company remains one of America’s most respected dance troupes. Nearly 90 years after its founding, it remains a vital entity. For this show, they pay tribute to three masters of 20th century art – artist Pablo Picasso, composer Igor Stravinsky and their legendary choreographer (as well as, company namesake) Martha Graham. Expect a wide range of dances enhanced with short narration, media and music.

To celebrate the success of 2015 Milano Expo, Xintiandi hosts Shanghai’s first festival celebrating Italian food, music and culture. True Italian brands will serve as vendors bringing the best of their country to Shanghai. Expect plenty of musical performances, Italian wine tastings and amazing food from all of the country’s regions.

For the first time, the European Food Festival takes over the Bund waterfront to celebrate the 40th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations. The event will showcase an array of restaurants, imported food & dairy products, wine and beers including Belgian waffles, German sausages, French bakery products, Dutch cheese, Greek Gyros, Irish Beer, Austrian ribs and loads more. You’ll get to enjoy live cooking shows and cultural performances while children will have fun with their own cooking activities on weekends.

Based on Aesop’s classic stories, this comedic musical follow three sinners who discover a much different version of Hell than they imagined. They must participate in this hell carnival at the behest of Lucifer himself. The show is the first for Twisted Carousel Theatre and Paper Street Production, which are run for Shanghai stage veterans Tim College, Lexi Kalteis, Kaylie Keefe and Danny Wall. Expect a mix of fire, knife throwing, acrobatics and song.

The Beijing based indie favorites have crafted a sound inspired by acts like Oasis and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The Xiami and Douban favorites are in the midst of a national tour, celebrating the release of their debut album The King of the Circus on the respected indie label, Tree Music.

The veritable Shanghai rock tradition returns to take over Yuyintang. Some of the city’s favorite acts will pay tribute to their musical inspirations by performing covers and dressing up like them. Spill Your Guts tackles Andrew W.K., The Arcbane is Cannibal Corpse, Hitobashira performs Marilyn Manson and a supergroup consisting of members of Jackanapes, The Machinery of Other Skeletons and XXYY salute The Offspring.

Until Oct 31: Rugby World Cup

Nov 2-6: World Congress on Art Deco

This biannual celebration of everything Art Deco makes its Asian debut. The mornings will be filled with talks by experts on topics ranging from architecture to art and film to fashion. There will be walks showcasing the city’s startling Art Deco architecture across five different areas. Capping off a long day, congress participants will get a flavor of 1930s Shanghai at dinners in historic venues across the city, with some featuring vintage menus.

Late October: China Basketball Association 

201509/cba.jpgChina’s biggest basketball league tends to announce their season schedule a couple of weeks before it starts, but expect it to be an interesting year. Stephon Marbury and his Beijing Ducks are still basking in the glow of their third championship in four years. However, Yi Jianlian leads perennial contenders Guangdong Southern Tigers as they hope to add a ninth CBA title to the mantle case. Former NBA top pick Greg Oden will attempt to revive his injury-filled career with the Jiangsu Tigers, while the Yao Ming-owned Shanghai Sharks will try to snap their two season playoff drought.
