The Grumpy Pig, a cute little restaurant dedicated to all thing porcine on Maoming Lu, has given itself a facelift, adding new Kin bar to its storefront.
Interiors are casually chic, and make for a pleasantly laid back environment in which to enjoy a few beers or cocktails. For those wishing to eat, the Grumpy Pig’s menu is available.
On the drinks front, Kin keeps it simple with a one-page menu of cocktails. Management admitted that thus far the cocktails are largely derived from the Grumpy Pig’s drinks menu, which is fine, but we reckon it would be nice to see some original offerings too.
First sip was from the happy hour drinks menu, a ‘Lil Mix’ (no relation to the girl pop group) – sake, gin or shochu mixed with key lime and yuzu kosho. Light, citrusy and seemingly mild, we could imagine knocking back more than a few of these, especially for RMB30 a go. Note that the happy hour is from 5-7pm and 9-10pm daily.
A ‘Mani Pedi’ (RMB68) with Absolut vodka, mint, grapefruit, calpico and grapefruit bitters followed suit. Sweet but unmemorable, this cocktail didn’t do it for us.
A ‘Cel-Rey’ (RMB60) on the other hand, was notable for all the right reasons. Combining Gordon’s gin with celery and yuzu kosho, we found it pleasingly strong and nicely balanced. That said, if you’re not a celery fan, steer clear.
Most cocktails on the menu are short drinks, but the long Americano High Ball (RMB60) bucks that trend. With 50/50 Campari and sweet vermouth topped off with soda, we found this to be thoroughly refreshing and drinkable. A perfect accompaniment for drinking with food.
Ultimately, Kin’s a very nice little spot for casual hangouts and drinks. It looks like there’s still some work to do in terms of distinguishing it from the Grumpy Pig, but we’ll definitely count this relaxed little spot in our hit list.
Price: RMB30-70 per drink.
