Restaurants and Foodie News

First up is Velluto, a new, broadly Italian restaurant opened on Nanjing Dong Lu near the Bund. Been hearing good things about their RMB308 semi-buffet lunch with free-flow prosecco.

Launching straight into the summer months, your friendly neighborhood Remedy 365 restaurant (there are three, by the way) has launched a new seasonal menu. Lots of healthy Chinese and Western dishes with a touch of indulgence here and there, one example being the homely tiramisu (below, RMB35).

Another new menu is afoot at 10 Corso Como, and this one’s all about taking it slow. Slow food, that is. Think haute Italian cuisine using choice premium ingredients from all around China. Yunnan wild boar stew or Mont Blanc with Tianjin chestnuts and jasmine tea ice cream, anyone?

Everyone knows food is the key to preventing a raging hangover after a night's boozing. Husk on Fengxian Lu just a few blocks up from Nanjing Xi Lu metro has an awesome new menu of late night snacks. Our particular favorite: sinfully cheesy crab and clam gratin (below, RMB32) and the deep-fried garlic pork ribs (RMB28), served from 10.30pm-1.30am.

Meanwhile on Yanping Lu, SH Bakery, owned by affable French expat named Ox, has opened in the space formerly occupied by Fat Mama Pizzeria. They do a mean jambon beurre (ham and butter on rustic bread, below), and an awesome brioche with fresh strawberries. Also, try the awesome housemade cashew milk, a great alternative for non-dairy drinkers.

Bars Bars Bars

Kelley Lee & Co. continue Boxing Cat Brewery’s Shanghai domination with a new branch at the popular bar and gastropub out on Hongqiao’s Zunyi Lu. All your favorite craft beers on tap with plates of hearty comfort food.

Lots of new bar openings this month: Shen, at Yan’an Dong Lu is another new Bund-side outfit with a patio rivalling the also new Waitan Yard (above) and The Nest as a chilled out mid-range drinking spot on the Bund. Drinks from RMB55 and a menu of Chinese-style bar snacks.

Unico on the Bund already has a lot of cocktails, but now they’re going one step further with El Lab, a new molecular “drink laboratory” bar within a bar. Creations include ‘chocolate quinoa,’ ‘spritz gelatine’ and ‘melon al jamon’ (left) Trippy yet Instagram-worthy stuff.

Meanwhile in Xintiandi, Via bar is now open at Soho Fuxing Plaza. Halfway between a club and a lounge, this place is one of the first nightlife options to open in the new Soho mall. Probably won’t be the last, either.

Meanwhile two new promising bars have opened, the first being Whisper, a cigar and whisky lounge next to Malt Fun in the former French Concession. Looks bizarre on the outside, but fits the part on the inside with suitably dark interiors and a range of whisky decent enough for a few hours entertainment.

For those who prefer the grape, new upmarket wine bar Somm Wine Gallery has opened on Anfu Lu, specializing in wine by the glass served via Enomatic machines. Perfect for those wanting a tasting experience, without having to fork out for a whole bottle.
