Town Crier! is random snippets of Shanghai news that just may have an effect on your life...
The largest Disney store in the world opened today (May 20) at 13.14pm in Lujiazui, Shanghai. We mention the time because this is a particularly meaningful string of numbers: 5201314 in Chinese is representative to the phrase “I love you forever," a special message from Disney to its fans in China. And plenty of fans there were. According to our spies, around a thousand people queued in line for the big unveil. Here's a little of what awaited them.
Apparently, specific timing wasn't the only detail Walt Disney Company paid attention to. At the newly launched flagship store, more than 2,000 Disney products including clothing, bags, mugs, accessories and smart phone covers can be purchased in various themed zones with prices generally around RMB20-50 more expensive than in other Disney stores.
“99 percent of the products are exclusively sold in this particular store, thus making a comparison with others doesn’t make much sense,” says Paul Candland, President of The Walt Disney Company, Asia. Okay...
Although the interiors weren't quite as large as we expected (being the world's biggest Disney store and all), the interactive shopping experience is definitely there. Famed Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto greet you from the ceiling in hot air balloons, while on specific counters, short clips of classic Disney movies are shown on screens. Take a look at our pictures to get an idea of what's on offer.
There is also a Marvel section where hand-made sculptures of Iron Man, the Hulk and Captain America stand high on counters. We hear products are going to be updated very quickly in line with upcoming Disney movies.
Expect large crowds if you're visiting the huge fantasy land in the near future. But hey, as long as you get to see your favorite Disney character, who cares about the queue? ...Right?
