This month, the redevelopment (read: demolition) of a large area of the old town’s southeast quarter was approved. Before it's gone, join Historic Shanghai on a visit to this part of the ancient city, where a community has existed since the mid-16th century. Places like Qiaojia Street, where Albert Einstein once dined in a beautiful, architecturally eclectic house, see what’s left of the street markets, the clan associations, the homes of the gentry and the ghosts of old temples, along the curve of ancient creeks, and finish up with a visit to the hauntingly beautiful remains of a 16th century garden and library.
