Join award-winning poets and translators Eleanor Goodman and Ravi Shankar as they discuss the nature of translation and the necessity of creating innovative idiomatic solutions to successfully bring a writer from another tongue and era into English. Shankar has translated the work of Andal, a 8th century Tamil poet/saint, and Goodman the work of numerous Chinese poets including Wang Xiaoni. Additionally, both are practicing poets and so they will discuss how their own sense of craft informs their translation practice, and alternately, how translation affects their own sense of aesthetics and expression in their own work. An interactive discussion, this talk will encourage audience participation.
