In this universe, humans and robots have merged, with humans equipped with superior artificial body parts and even augmented brains. In the form of a cyberpunk ship of Theseus, Ghost In The Shell examines at what point does a human cease to be human, as humans replace more and more of their natural bodies with artificial parts. Conversely, at what point do machines and AI become conscious living beings with “souls”? Can souls exist inside these robot “shells”?
