Ballet in China--where did it come from, what is it like today, and what happened between the two points in time? By highlighting a number of key ballets and using photographs and footage, Eva Chou will provide an overview of ballet’s history.

Famous works like Swan Lake illuminate its early stages. Works from the Cultural Revolution like Our Red Army Girls and White-Haired Girl, whose names are still familiar to many today, constitute another stage. One or two ballets will represent the modern period, which starts around 2005 with China’s rapid economic rise.
