1989 was a year when hip hop really exploded in almost every sense with ground-breaking releases, conscious/gangsta rap and incredible productions that weren't only James Brown samples. In comparison, 1999 saw the rise of the independent hip hop artist and the mainstream albums were gradually breaking away from the "Big Willy" generic rap on the radio.
