Jackie, beer connoisseur prone to whimsy and owner of well-stocked microbar Jackie’s Beernest, took a note from JK Rowling and spent two weeks creating his own recipe for the legendary butterbeer drink often quaffed by Harry Potter and pals. That's right, you too can sport the foamy mustache you envied when watching him smile, longingly, at Hermione.
However, this is no sickly-sweet kiddie drink (see this version that Disneyland dreamed up). In Jackie's version, Speckled Hen ale, No. 38 stout, brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon and a pat of butter get brewed together and topped off with a wreath of whipped cream and thimble-full of whisky. The result is a rich, malty drink that’s neither too sweet nor too bitter. Jackie will cook the beguiling brew right in front of you (specifically because his Chinese customers wouldn't believe that it was actually beer...to their credit the foamy concoction does look like coffee). Don't be fooled, the drink has its share of alcohol, but isn't overwhelming, nor rich to the point of eggnog. We finished our glass easily. Served warm and frothy, it’s a sufficiently grown up tipple with just enough fun to have us imagining there’s magic in the air.
RMB50/glass. See listing here
