The hot stone massage at Green Massage in Shanghai Center is one of the best we’ve ever had. Maybe they slipped something into the massage oil. Or maybe Pansy Chong, the Singaporean chain’s general manager, really was the first person to bring the authentic hot stone massage to Shanghai (as she proudly claims). Eight years of hot stone happiness later, Chong retains the original rub-down recipe and teaches it to her well-trained, polite staff. Many local spas offering similar treatments fail to utilize the hot stones’ full healing potential. But here the piping pebbles are plentiful; you lie on a bed of them, grasp one in each palm and even have them placed in between your toes during the treatment. Our therapist Tracy used deep pressure and slow, controlled movements to relentlessly release kinks. With a gilded corridor crowned by a stuffed peacock, the cozy spa is just as elegant and professional as a luxury hotel spa, but less than half the price (RMB498/90min).
