When the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) came to Shanghai last month, they showcased 13 brands of booze, whisky heavy, to the eager public, 11 of which have not yet entered the Chinese market. But the buzz is that this may soon change. Here are a couple of the more unique names you should keep an eye out for.
Distilled after an original pre-Prohibition recipe, "The Good Stuff" as this whisky, was referred to during Prohibition, was Al Capone's whiskey of choice. Aged for five years and boasting sweet honey and caramel flavors, it was first made (legally) in the US in 2006.
Originating in Western North Carolina, these guys produce moonshine. That's right, and the Chinese loved it. Actually, they call it white whiskey, created from an heirloom corn that goes by the name of "Crooked Creek." Conceived in 1840 and rediscovered in 2010, this is a pure taste of Americana is a bottle. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it'll soon cross the border.
If you're looking for something now, try the High West Distillery. Founded in Park City, Utah in 1870, this is the state's first distilleries (and also happens to be a ski-in only venue with a full restaurant - how chic). Their High West’s spirits are distributed in China by Dxcel International Trading. Try their 16yo Straight Rye Whiskey, which is spicy and exciting, with a bit of vanilla and fruit hanging there in the background. Contact Simon Pendergast, Tel: 5240 0937 ext.205 to find out more.
