Les Suites Orient earned the top spot on TripAdviser.com for Shanghai hotels thanks to tourists, but it hasn’t garnered as much local buzz since its 2010 opening. It’s a bit of a conundrum, considering this hip Taiwanese boutique hotel exudes understated modern sophistication. Just a stone’s throw away from where Yan’an Lu meets the Bund is the Art Deco building that’s undergone a sleek, serene makeover. There are dark wood stairways lit by candles, massive windows framing sweeping Bund views and a huge collection of antiques, including an old piano that looks as though it’ll collapse if you tickle its keys. The tranquil guestrooms are generous in size but reserved in style with the simple beauty of streamlined Danish modern furniture. The details speak the most, like a very cool Mad Men mini-bar that unfolds from a chest and a discrete iPod dock hooked up to surround sound. Starting at RMB1,800 per night, it’s a real deal for a chic Bund bunk-up.
