Beer is now flowing cheerfully at Kaiba 3.0, located at the top of the brand-spankin’-new Taikang Terrace complex. It’s the same laid-back, beer-bar vibe, just a little bit different in form and function. First off, a top floor warrants a bit of dressing up. While the tables and decor remain made of warm, comfortable wood, the space is pumped up with dramatic high-peaked ceilings supported by huge wooden beams, a pretty bar and a nice big outside terrace. While the weather remains pleasant, one can sit out there for hours sipping on beers and overlooking the neighboring Tianzifang warren, watching people wander aimlessly like confused Pac-men.
Behind the bar, owner Rudy Wimmer is expanding the scope of his offerings. He will not only carry the standard bottles of Belgium brews but will also be moving towards kegs. More beer on tap — there will eventually be 10 different options — means better draft beer, all served in the correct glasses. Hoorah! We tried a draft chocolate stout on our visit, which was like tucking in to a rich, full meal of malty goodness. Rudy’s kitchen will also be a bit busier; as his cooking area is now bigger, he’s planning to offer a greater assortment of edibles. Expect a full menu to be launched this month.
