We’re so happy to announce another international food option is now available in Sanya.
Outline Eatery soft opened in June this year in a small shop in Sanya’s inner city. It has already received significant praise from both Chinese and international customers.
Hailing from Shenzhen, owner Liu Zhenjie has accumulated 10 years of experience in American and Western restaurants. He saw an untapped market in Sanya for Western food that residents have also noticed.
“I found that there was a large vacancy in the Western food market in Sanya, and most restaurants were high-end hotel consumption,” Liu told us.
Outline started slow and then built into a full product line. The main purpose is an everyday food perfect for the general public.
Outline serves hamburgers, pasta, coffee and iced drinks. There are classic options available and homesick picks like the Mexican Burger. By no means is it a direct copy of American burger joints, which we appreciate. Outline has its own take on potato wedges – making an option for seaweed flavored.
“Our specialty hamburger is the lamb hamburger,” he tells us.
Outline’s current space is admittedly small, but Liu said Sanya should expect great things from them.
“There will be many new products in the future. Now the main reason is that the rental space is relatively inexpensive, which limits our production capability. We will constantly update [the menu with] some flavors of hamburgers in the later stage and may serve hot dogs, full-course meals, or tacos.”
Here at That’s Sanya, we’re looking forward to watching Outline experiment with their menu and giving them plenty of feedback on what tastes good.
Like many entrepreneurial startups, Outline hasn’t been without its own troubles. On their WeChat, you can see apologetic responses to poor ratings, a sign that they are invested in their food quality – unlike some big food chains.
When creating the restaurant, Liu took a hand at decorating the space but in the end he didn’t like it.
“The positioning was not well thought out, the area of the store was very limited. A total of 27 square meters was wasted, and the bar was an inappropriate size.”
Additionally, the location was dilapidated before even beginning and much thought was taken into refurbishing the area.
“During remodeling, we were there from morning to night. When replacing floor tiles, the whole floor collapsed, resulting in an increase in labor costs and time, and the budget exceeded projection.”
Still, the struggles and pitfalls have been eclipsed by the success in the short time since its opening.
“The best thing about opening a restaurant is that all of my friends support it and helped publicize it during the soft opening. There were many guests when it officially opened, which was entirely the credit of friends. I appreciate them very much!”
He welcomed guests to come and give their feedback directly, though he confessed for international guests his English was poor and sometimes he feels embarrassed.
“I also hope everyone can come and taste my hamburgers and give some suggestions to help me make more progress.”
Grab a burger and support this local business. The more that shops like this survive in Sanya, the more food entrepreneurs will want to head here and open their own eatery.
