Owned by an entrepreneur from Huizhou who has numerous other eateries across China, no expense has been spared in making The Purple a showcase restaurant of the highest pedigree. Situated in the new OCT Bay entertainment district, ancient houses in Jiangxi Province have been deconstructed and the timber then used to construct the main dinning hall. The restaurant is full of dynastic antiques as well as modern designs, fusing old and new as a means of communicating the culinary concept of the eatery.
The fare encompasses all types of Guangdong food (Cantonese, Hakka and Chaoshan) and all the dishes are served in a Western-style: course after course, beginning with an appetizer and concluding with a dessert. There’s no menu as such and you must book ahead. Essentially, every meal is tailored to the customer’s requirements so if you opt for afternoon tea, you may pay as little is RMB68, or as much RMB668 depending on what selection of Dim Sum and snacks you require.
Amongst the catalogue of exquisitely prepared and presented dishes we sampled, the Fresh Chinese Wild Mushroom Soup and the Rice with Crab Roe and Sweet Sauce really stood-out. All was washed down with hot Hakka Rice-Wine - poured from an antique pot, it was as delicious as it was potent!
