New restaurant: 63 Burger & Booze

To all you desperate carnivores in town, we have some exciting news. Another 63 Burger is now open in Zhujiang Xincheng, and this time with a new focus: the booze!

One step into this high-ceilinged restaurant and guests are met with a down-to-earth, carefree attitude. The ketchup and mustard bottles perched on each wooden table will most likely strike a nostalgic chord in American patrons, while vintage signs glittering on each wall add sentimental flavor to this industrial-style canteen.

Burgers are, obviously, the catch point here. Put aside your guilty feelings for absorbing extra calories and order the Juicy Lucy (RMB78), which sandwiches pickles, cheese-stuffed beef patty, salty bacon, sweet onion rings, soft tomato slices and crispy lettuce between two sesame buns. The Thousand Island dressing poured over the vegetables counteracts the greasiness brought by the thick meat and luscious cheese. If you can’t quite ignore the gaining of one or more inches on the waistline, consider switching your choice to the Veggie Light Burger (RMB58), which replaces the fatty patty with fried tofu and hash browns. It accomplishes the same level of satiety but with half the calorie content – an ideal option for those on perpetual diets.

Happiness doubles when you have refreshing cocktails to accompany a platter of chewy burgers, and 63 has even managed to transform Chinese tea into an option on the alcohol menu. The Cantonese Herbal Tea (RMB70) is made of gin, Montenegro, Angostura bitters and Wanglaoji. Yes, you heard right. Wanglaoji, the nation’s most popular herbal tea, is mixed with alcohol in a bowl and served on a plate with two cinnamon sticks and roasted Chinese dates, resulting in a sweet but strong bouquet. Eliciting a slight burning sensation, we reckon it must be good for circulation and certainly warms the insides. The peach Rosellejito (RMB68) is a lighter choice; its perfect balance of lime and fresh mint will have guests longing for one glass more.

With live band performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there’s yet another reason to dine at this chill-out paradise for lusty meat-eaters with a boozy disposition.
