The Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory issued a white typhoon warning today at 4.20pm, which means a tropical cyclone will most likely hit the city within 48 hours.

It is expected that the tropical depression will move towards the coastal areas from western Guangdong to northeastern Hainan. A tropical depression is a cyclone “with maximum sustained surface wind of 38 mph or less” while a tropical storm “has maximum sustained surface winds of 39-74 mph.” The Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen cautions that strong winds will probably start at sea, and that personnel offshore should prepare to take shelter according to the wind prevention instructions or notices from the maritime and fishery administrations.

The National Meteorological Center’s official Weibo account announced that the tropical depression will develop into the seventh typhoon of the year.
