Tue-Sun, Ongoing: From Rembrandt to Monet

Straight from Indianapolis Museum of Art, a total of 60 works by big name artists such as Monet, Rembrandt, Goya and Gauguin will be displayed in this exhibit, offering audiences a glimpse into the art worlds of the early Renaissance and French impressionism that influenced Europe until the 19th century.

Fri, Jan 17: Chinese Football

The Wuhan-based quintet Chinese Football specialize in youthful guitar driven emo in the vein of genre standouts like Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, Death Cab for Cutie and American Football. They will be joined by another Wuhan outfit Lonely Cockles as well as local bands Hoo! and MoonBand.

Fri, Jan 17: InterNations Welcome CNY Party: A Cantonese Night

Join Cantonese Night, a CNY-themed party organized by InterNations, to welcome the Year of the Rat. There will be three hours of free-flow of beer, wine and soft drinks, as well as dim sum at the Garden Hotel’s Lobby Lounge, where you can enjoy a magnificent waterfall view while mingling with cool expats. Sat, Jan 18: Guangdong International Youth Music Week Concert

Noteworthy maestro Michael Stern will be conducting a makeshift orchestra consisting of some 80 young, Chinese and overseas Chinese musicians on the last day of this year’s Guangdong International Youth Music Week. Expect a range of classics from Bach and a secret program performed by renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Sat, Jan 18: Beethoven by Chen Pi-hsien

In celebration of Ludwig Beethoven’s birth 250 years ago, Taiwanese pianist Chen Pi-hsien will stage a classical music concert at Xinghai Concert Hall this week. She previously lived in Germany, where she studied under reputable pianists at the Cologne University of Music and taught piano. Enjoy Beethoven in four programs at this concert.

Ongoing: Register for the Guangzhou 100 Ultra Trail Race

The Guangzhou 100, organized by the Guangzhou Sports Bureau, is an annual sporting event for trail runners, with routes covering the city’s iconic Baiyun Mountain, Maofeng Mountain, hills in Longdong and beyond. Participants – a total of 1,300 expected this year – are grouped into three categories – 30, 60 and 100 kilometers. The trail-running event is scheduled for March and registration is open now.
