Aug 4-5: Dancing Lion

Chronicling the story of the Cantonese people’s struggle against foreign forces invading Canton during the first Opium War, Dancing Lion tells a story of broken families, separated lovers and unyielding courage. The creation of this award-winning dance drama took five years, but the result is an uncompromising work that will amaze audiences.

Aug 5-9: Cliff Haus Summer Camp

Looking for a fun and exciting summer camp for your little rascals? Look no further than Cliff Haus. A campsite tucked away in a scenic part of Qingyuan that is dotted by karst mountains and tea farms, Cliff Haus is an ideal destination for city dwellers to enjoy an escape from urban routines and for their kids to pick up some outdoor knowledge in the wilderness. This five-day summer camp boasts fun-filled, inspiring activities including designing environment art, rock climbing, instrument making and more. Aug 7: More Than Love Concert

On Chinese Valentine’s Day, a concert will be staged for lovey-dovey couples at Xinghai Concert Hall, featuring a moving medley of movie scores like ‘Yesterday Once More,’ classics such as The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ as well as some of MJ’s hit songs. These will all be performed by instrumental band Music Fan Classical, who boasts a contemporary classical style.

Aug 8-12: Matilda the Musical

Winner of seven Oliver Awards and five Tony Awards, Matilda the Musical is simply sensational. It was adapted from the namesake book by popular children’s literature author Roald Dahl, who also wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. With music and lyrics by musical genius Tim Minchin, Matilda is as entertaining as its story is captivating.

Aug 10: A Concert Prone to Cancellation

Concerts get cancelled from time to time, it’s just the way it is. Bands know it, organizers know it and fans certainly know it (thanks a lot, Celine Dion). Four rockin’ bands – Pictured Resort, Teenage Riot, Yourboyfriendsucks! and Cheesemind – are set to play at T:union on the second Saturday of August. However, the organizers have flat out stated that this concert is prone to cancellation. While this would make for an absolute blast of a show, we must warn you – don’t get your hopes up.

Aug 10: Rythmo! by Samajam

Created with the little ones in mind, Rythmo! is a highly interactive musical performance. Each child and parent will receive drumsticks, whirly tubes or an African djembe drum, and will be led by talented musicians to create something extraordinary. Here’s an amazing fact: Roughly 6,000 kids participated in one of their shows last time around. So bring the family and have yourselves a hell of a time.

Aug 15: Great Good Fine Ok

If you stop and think about summer music, synth-pop is a likely genre to start playing in your head. When the 1970s pop genre looked to be on its way out, Brooklyn duo Great Good Fine Ok emerged in 2013 to offer fans their retro futurist works. Their single ‘You’re the One for Me’ from their 2013 EP was a hit and earned the band a place at South by Southwest that year. This month, they’ll bring their awesome tunes to Mao Livehouse.

Aug 16: Gin Fingerstyle Guitar Concert

A fingerstyle guitar maven, Gin may have inherited his guitar prowess from Japan’s guitar master Isato Nakagawa. During his career, which spans more than a decade, Gin has played fingerstyle that combines folk, flamenco and classical guitar with stunning skill. The Japanese guitarist returns to China this month with his latest album It’s You, which includes ‘Sign,’ ‘Smile’ and ‘Goodbye My Love,’ – three songs that fans are sure to love.

Aug 18: Wu Muye Piano Recital

Beijing pianist Wu Muye is eulogized as ‘gold finger,’ often performing for esteemed audiences around the world. Having picked up the craft at the age of 4, Wu has made his mark in the music world, even helping China and France strengthen ties by tickling the ivories at the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This month, Wu will take over the Guangzhou Opera House to play some of Schubert’s finest pieces.

Aug 20: Alpha Wolf

For those of you who have never heard of Alpha Wolf, listen to the young band’s debut album release Mono, which was met with critical acclaim. The Australian metalcore outfit has a knack for combining the sounds of multiple genres. You’ve got to see it to believe it.

Aug 22-25: PAW Patrol Musical

The furry characters from popular American children’s show PAW Patrol are visiting Guangzhou this month for a musical performance aimed at the youngsters in town. Led by an 11-year-old boy, a team of courageous canines inspired by real-life professions such as police officers and fire fighters — are always ready to save the day. Watching this musical is a great way to teach your little ones about bravery.

All month: The 2nd Guangzhou Insect Art Exhibition

The animal kingdom is a world of wonder. The insect world is particularly fascinating, and – for some – decidedly icky. Learn more about bugs at the 2nd Guangzhou Insect Art Exhibition, where a total of 30,000 insect specimens and 5,000 live critters will be on display. Tours and lectures will be hosted throughout the event.

Hilton hotels in Guangzhou, Foshan and Heyuan are presenting their chefs’ signature dishes at seven different locations from July to August. Popular dishes include crispy chicken with black truffle sauce, roasted Alaska black cod with scrambled egg white, Mandarin fish with chicken superior soup, slow-cooked beef with beer and herbs, braised zucchini with dried seafood and crab soup, among others. More excitingly for Chinese foodies, three dishes which were winners at a cooking competition held by Hilton are also on offer.

Dinosaur lovers, come explore the world of enormous creatures that once roamed over our planet. Centered around the theme of ‘traverse,’ this exhibition takes audiences on a wonderful journey into the dinosaur kingdom by using advanced technology, which makes the presentations a treat for the eyes. Lectures by experts are scheduled throughout the exhibition for those of you who want to dive deeper into the dinosaur realm. The exhibition is free to attend, but an appointment is required.

Ongoing: Italy: The Beauty of Knowledge Exhibition

Italy: the Beauty of Knowledge is an exhibition led by the National Research Council along with five main Italian science museums based respectively in Naples, Trento, Florence and Milan. Organized by Consulate General of Italy in Guangzhou and the Guangdong Science Center, Guangzhou will be the only stop in China. This exhibition shows the relationship between scientific research, innovation and quality of life. Exhibits are focused on five themes – health, environment, space, cultural heritage and food and nutrition, which will lend insight into the innovative side of the Mediterranean nation.
