That's Guangzhou takes a look at the best gigs of the week.
Fri, Jan 18: Nu Wave @ SD Livehouse
Locals Nein or Gas Muss and Smelly Hoover join Hong Kongers Phoon for an evening of great Cantonese indie music. While Nein or Gas Muss hit music headlines for their debut EP last year, Smelly Hoover also came out with some great new music near the midpoint of 2018. Catch this event for a taste of some of the best that South China has to offer.
Fri Jan 18, 8pm; RMB60-140. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Fri, Jan 18: Leng @ T:union

After disbanding in early 2018, Leng are finally back with a new drummer and ready to rock out in Guangzhou once more. While we worried the demise of this post rock band might be, in a way, another representative of the trend of university musicians giving up the ghost and closing up shop upon graduation, it’s great to see them continue where they left off last year.
Fri Jan 18, 8pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Jan 19: MHP @ Floating Island Club
Also known as the Son of Shanghai Techno, MHP is one of the earliest techno producers on the mainland. Deeply influenced by techno scenes in Detroit and Berlin, MHP’s life as a music producer has closely mirrored the development of the genre in China. Catch him, along with the Hoodoo crew, this Saturday night.
Sat Jan 19, 8pm; free entry. Floating Island Club. See event listing.
Sat, Jan 19: Liao Xiaoqiang @ Mao Livehouse
Influenced by the likes of Jay Chou, Liao Xiaoqiang was born in Guangdong in 1998. A highly productive musician in his own right, Liao has been firing out music consistently over the past few years. Liao is known for his charismatic style and his collaborations with hip hop producers like ZHI16 and Whizzbiz.
Sat Jan 19, 8.30pm; RMB160-280. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
