Four Japanese girls set out to redefine the meaning of ‘cute’ via music and thus formed Chai. Fusing sonic elements, their sound is influenced by Basement Jaxx, Gorillaz, CSS and Tom Tom Club, while lyrics focus on self-empowerment. In the island nation, the four-piece band have won a devoted following with their unique music videos.

This Wednesday, your favorite local basketball team, Guangzhou Long-Lions (16-13), will face off against the Jiangsu Dragons (13-16) at Tianhe Gymnasium. This week’s sporting event marks the Long-Lions’ first Guangzhou home game in about a month. The team played in Foshan throughout December at the newly finished Foshan International Sports and Cultural Center. Wednesday’s game is sure to be electric, as the Long-Lions are angling for a late-season push to improve their seeding in the 2019 CBA playoffs. Meanwhile, Jiangsu has struggled on the road, with an underwhelming 4-10 record away. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gymnasium.

Wed Jan 9, 7.30pm; RMB40-300. Tianhe Gymnasium. See event listing. Tickets

mozart-l-opera.jpgImage via Mozart L'Opéra Rock/Facebook

Yes, it’s about the life story of the legendary Austrian composer, and there’s classical music involved, but not quite in the way you’d imagine. As its name implies, this French musical intertwines pop rock with classic compositions by Mozart. On stage, the juxtaposition of rock music and classical compositions and costumes serves to underline the timelessness of Mozart and his works. The two-act musical will be staged at Guangzhou Opera House this month. Be sure not to miss it.

Fri-Sun Jan 11-13 (please note: this event continues daily until the 20th, with the exception of Monday, January 14), 2.30pm/7.30pm; RMB280-1,280. Guangzhou Opera House. See event listing. Tickets.

One of the brightest Mandopop stars, Wang Leehom has been active on the music scene in China since the summer of 1995, when he appeared on a talent show in Taiwan. The New York-born musician and Berklee College of Music graduate rose to prominence through the release of his second album The One and Only, the namesake single of which made Wang’s name known to every Chinese person who has ever patronized a karaoke bar. His rendition of ‘Descendants of the Dragon,’ a well-known Chinese song from the ’80s, added to his popularity on the Chinese mainland.
